Grand Prix commentary

What on earth is that hysterical muppet James Allen on?
From the start to finish all he does is blather on trying to hype everything up.
Brundle is very good, but as for the rest of them, they really do seem to spoil it.
Take a leaf out of the two top guys who commentate on Moto GP - they are brilliant - just a couple of guys talking about something they know about, and a good product as well.
James Allen - sack him.

Just finished listening to the same inane hyperdrivel as you folks, and agree something must be done. Spoilt the armchair race experience big time
If it wasn't for Brundle I would switched the sound off and listen to the commentary on Radio 5 instead. Its usually pretty good.
And what was all this comment about "The Longest F1 Season Ever"? Nonsense, of course. In the 60s it wasn't unusual to have the first F1 race of the year in January and the last in November. And up until the early 70s there were often more than 20 F1 races in a season. OK, they didn't all count for the World Championship but in those days a race was a race.

Until the racing becomes 'as close as you like!' or they start riding 'as fast as you like!' or 'as tight as you like!' or 'as annoying as you like!'.
or that could be the superbikes guy

And all those references to Coronation Street were driving me batty. Do they think that the average F1 fan is also a Corrie fan?
To be fair, I think he's directed to say this because the coverage had gone over into the normal "Corrie" time & their viewers would be jumping up & down shouting at the TV about missing something.
I don't think there's any assumption that GP fans (watchers ?) are also interested in Corrie.
Brundle is an utter professional, an excellent broadcaster who absolutely knows his game, 100%. I have a great deal of time for him. He seems to be respected by everyone involved in the business & his command of the pre-race pit-lane walk, when he's up against the (normally) German commentators, is wonderful.
James Allen no doubt tries to provide that degree of excitement that the great MW always used to, but no-one can slip into his shoes. Again, don't so much blame JA himself, he was chosen for the job to promote hype & excitement & again is directed "from above" to say & behave much in the way he does.
Given the fact they have to follow the race on the screens, keep an eye on the live timing data displays & report thereon, listen to what's coming into their ear all the time from the producer & at the same time, actually commentate, I think they do a bl..dy good job. I know I couldn't do it or anything like it.
jeez you should have been listening to it on R5... Maurice Hamilton is a great journalist/motorport writer and one I havea lot of respect for but his commentary was bloody awful. I had to turn it off as it was so disjointed and the continuity was awful. the third time he sadi "if you look at....." was too much and i swore very loudly in frustration. He couldnt tell the difference between a McLaren and a Williams and appeared to be very unfamiliar with the concept of commentary....
Maurice Hamilton is a very good motor sport journalist - but being a commentator is something very different. He was at his best when he acted as the "expert" to Jonathan Ledgard's commentary. Being promoted to full blown commentator is not always the best thing.
I always liked Murray Walker's description of the difference between his role and the role played by his assistant, James Hunt -
"I supplied the commentary and James supplied the comments". Which just about sums up the two roles nicely.
