Been signed up to do this three day course through work. Anyone done it? Thoughts?

Didn't realise there was a course. I've read the book and have Covey reading it on MP3, I think it's a great thing.

Let us know how the course goes

Did it years ago in a previous life - thought it was total bks - think I've still got the book somewhere - never read it.

The Circle of Concern genuinely allowed me to refocus my priorities, consider how I worked on a day to day basis and become a lot more efficient.

Haven't done a structured course but would recommend it if you can.

I think the Emotional Bank Account is something all managers should give consideration to as well.

To be honest it sounds like the exact type of american positivity bullst I despise. But I'm signed up so will go in with an open mind. I just worry that I have a very limited attention span when it comes to things like this and three days looks painful!

Will let you know how I get on.

Here they are. I like the idea behind them but the titles of them is just the usual management lingo bullst. Like Synergize should really be Teamwork etc.

Habit 1: Be Proactive
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind (Have a clear goal)
Habit 3: Put First Things First (Priorities)
Habit 4: Think Win-Win (Find 1 solution for multiple problems)
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize (Teamwork)
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw (continually develop your skills and abilities)
Habit 8: Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs

I considered doing this once but decided just to buy a new one instead.

Obvious but true - my father once spent 2 hours trying to bring down a tree with his trusty saw that he's used for 40 years. I nipped out to B&Q and bought a new blade. Tree was down in 15 minutes smile

Ninth habit is to make sure you don't list eight habits within the Seven Habits above.

I thought the 8th habit was "From Effectiveness to Greatness"

Had the book a few years (and the 8th habit book) and I must get round to reading them! smile

The title is "The SEVEN habits of Highly Effective People"

Or is that the secret - always have an extra habit?

Very Zen. smile

Zen? Sounds more like Scientology. "here's a course for 7 Habits", then "but now there's a new EXTRA SECRET one", until eventually you're 99 Habit Effective and you find out that the key 100th habit is aliens.

I was on a plane from Belfast back home to London and I sat next to two women from a leading accountancy firm who were attending a course in London. They had this pack and they were to be working as a team. There were tasks in the pack and they were dividing them up between the two of them.

One of the tasks was to talk about the art of delegation. One of the women said "I'm good at delegating, so I'll do that."

I burst out laughing but they just looked at me as if I was mental!

I did a course many years ago as an apprentice engineer/technician and thought it was a total waste of time. Looking back I think I was not mature enough to really grasp what it was on about and certainly did not make the most of that opportunity. That said I'm not really a fan of that kind of course

I was watching 30 rock the other week and Jack as going on about 6 sigma, well I gave it a quick google as I thought it was amusing and was anticipation some bullst website about it, turns out its a real thing....

I once worked for a company which was heavily into all this 6-sigma rubbish. I was a contractor so luckily I could get away with taking little interest in it.

I felt that those who embraced it fully and aspired to be 6-sigma 'black-belts' or whatever, were the least productive 'brown-nose' types anyway and 6-sigma gave them something else to faff around with, instead of getting any proper work done.

The company seemed to jump on any 'management tool' bandwagon going. I suspect an awful lot of time and money was wasted in the process. It might explain why they're no longer trading.

They once introduced some kind of new guide to cleaning and tidying the workplace. 'Segregate, Sort, Sweep, Sustain.' Probably wrong but it was something along those lines. Imagine telling a bunch of guys, some of whom were in their fifth decade of employment, that they've previously been doing it all wrong!

15 minutes? Dynamite would take it down in 0.15 seconds. It's the PH way...
