how to not ruin future chances
Discussion
I got offered a job i applied for and found out the salary was much lower than i could afford realistically with the commute. I turned the job down, now this is a training post and theres not many of them about, so a week later i got a call of the regional manager basically saying think about it some more its a good opportunity and she said i can do more hours in less days to help with travelling costs. I ended up accepting.
Anyway fast forward a few weeks ive sent documentation off, filled in forms etc and a job comes up, same thing with a different company much closer to home, i applied and have been offered and accepted this new job.
How do i let the old company down bearing in mind i would have took someones opportunity and bare in mind they essentially hunted me down to take it, so that in the future they dont look at my application and think f
k him he f
ked us over all that effort was wasted etc etc?? Do you think they will understand my situation?

Phone them, don't write or email. Explain that you didn't want it initially but they talked you into and then another opportunity came up which is closer and more suitable. It happens all the time. Don't like or make up some other excuse.
Be polite and explain the situation. If they react badly then that is probably just a good indication that you wouldn't want to work for them anyway.
I have had the situation a couple of times when I have been offered one job and then offered another, or offered promotion to stay. One time the other person when ape s
t, and I do mean ape s
t. Very unprofessional. The other wrote to me saying they were disappointed not to get me and if I changed my mind or something else came up to call them.

Would be nice to say "..and you have just made my decision even easier" to see if they started throwing things at you!
t, and I do mean ape s
t. Be upfront and honest, be apologetic of course, but there's nothing they can really do. If they are sensible professionals, they won't hold it against you if you have had a better offer they can't match or better. No shame in saying to them that if the package was better you would have thought more about staying with them either, it might force them offer something you might be pleased with.
To be honest, hooking you with "you can do extra hours" was a pretty crappy offer anyway, I would have started with adding the cost of commuting, with some inconvenience money, then a rough 10% on top for the risk of jumping ship to a new company. Plus having a job closer with a shorter commute is in truth something money can't buy.
I know the world is a small place but I really would not lose any sleep about going with the better offer for you. As yet, you don't really have any loyalty to this company.

To be honest, hooking you with "you can do extra hours" was a pretty crappy offer anyway, this is likely not to be part of the contractural basic and having a job closer with a shorter commute is something money can't buy.

Its not necessarily losing sleep more that in a year or so i will probably want to move to the company as they tend to pay better once trained, so basically i dont want to ruin any further chance i may get.Be upfront and honest, be apologetic of course, but there's nothing they can really do. Don't feel guilty about it. One need to look after oneself first and foremost. As 944fan said above, be honest, talk to them and let them know the truth.
There is always a flip side to any coin. They've told you that THEY wanted only you etc; however, they've told you whatever was in their best interest to get you on board, it doesn't mean that someone before you did not refused the position...isn't it? I am sure that they had at least 50 applications.
Take care of your needs and wants.

as far as im aware i had far more experience than the other applicants, i know this because the other job a girl got in and she had no experience whatsoever and she was only given one after i initially turned it down, they then decided to open up another job and re-offer me it.There is always a flip side to any coin. I am confused...in your first post you made it clear that this was a training position with a possibilities for better earnings down the road after training. So the experience is relevant to certain extend because they will train and develop you to their standard, liking, company philosophy etc. If they open a position especially for you after they already had given the job to this girl and you already rejected the job first time around, you have to ask yourself, what is the real truth here?
Please rest assured that I am not disregarding your knowledge or abilities to do the job, I am just being devil advocate.
How the first time there was only one training position and suddenly they are two? How long it took them between giving the job to the girl and contacting you? Did they assessed her for a week? Did she still with them?
