Challenging drives. Romania, Arad to Bucharest, deva/sibiu
Discussion
Just wondered if anybody else here has done it?
Just had my first go on this route, and can honestly say in 20 years of driving wagons I've never had to concentrate so much!!!
26 of us, did Budapest to Bucharest and agreed its 1 of the toughest roads we've driven, mostly at night and in a big thunderstorm just to make it that bit tougher.
That said, in the right car, and at the right time of day it could be pretty special, as long as you avoid the dead dogs, stray dogs, bikes, hookers and pedestrians!!!

I've been on those roads in a coach, although not down to Bucharest. Did you do the Transfagarasan Highway?
Agree that the roads are pretty crazy, especially when main trans-European highways are basically single carriage rural roads through villages. The chaos when an accident or broken traffic light is ridiculous.

We went on holiday to Romania this year, drove down from the UK.
In that part of the world we did the following;
Vienna - Miskolc - Sighisora - Brasov - Constanta - Through Bucharest - Transfagarasan - Cluj - Budapest - Linz
Not in a truck but a Range Rover Classic. Was a eye-opening journey but I would certainly do it again. Lovely part of the world.

No we didn't. With the trucks, when we are out east we try and stick to the e routes when ever possible, so we went down the e81 from Sibiu to, Pitesti which in itself was quite a drive Agree that the roads are pretty crazy, especially when main trans-European highways are basically single carriage rural roads through villages. I'm sitting in my work house in Romania right now (Ploiesti, about 40 mins from Bucharest).
I love driving here, the horse and carts are a bit of an issue, well truly dangerous when your out in the remote villages.
It can be crazy though, the locals will quite happily overtake you in a 50klm limit at 90klms and slam on the brakes in front of you before the next corner. Leave any kind of gap between yourself and the car infront in the towns or cities and it will be used quickly.
Brilliant place though with some amazing roads. And yes, the people are incredibly nice. The only trouble you see is from foreigners!!

Have to agree on all points. Thought most of the people we met were great, if a little guarded at first.I love driving here, the horse and carts are a bit of an issue, well truly dangerous when your out in the remote villages.
