Alfa 147 - I blame Pistonheads
Discussion
On the train to Clacton-On-Sea to collect a 2001 Alfa 147 Lusso I won on eBay on Sunday for the princely sum of £560.
Red , black leather, telefilms, looks in good knick, owner emigrating and has looked after the car. New back box , tyres discs and pads in Dec 2012 and a new MOT in July 2013
Belts last changed in 2008.
Been reading the posts on pistonheads too long and finally cracked......Gave no need for a second car, but have always wanted an Alfa.....Sorted AA breakdown and may buy some oil at the petrol station on the 130 mile trip home.....
Here's the car :

150 miles home , took 3 hours , the M25 was hideous !
It's a 2.0 , very smooth drive i though. Slight vibration in the steering at above 80mph, brakes feel a little soft but that could be just me, armrest is in an awkward position for changing gear and putting handgbrake on and off - now understand why it was in the "raised position" when i went to pick up the car
Overall, very pleased......

Looks nice.
If it drives OK and you are going to keep it, then get the belt/tensioner/water pump done ASAP.
And if it clatters when cold, then get the variator replaced at the same time.
If you like spannering, then changing the timing belt it is a time consuming, but very satisfying DIY job.
You will need a couple of special tools and a cam locking kit.
Check that the exhaust isn't blowing from the horrible flexi pipe.
The gear change is often sloppy, and the exhaust needs to come off to replace the cables or the shift mechanism. Nasty job.
And change the brake fluid. No one ever seems to bother, and it can make a world of difference.
The 147 isn't the sharpest handling car, but the twin spark motors sound good and enjoy being thrashed.
They are a bit expensive to tax and insure, but I really like them.
They have a bit of style and a lots of character. With nice leather trim they feel quite special.
Good luck.

I'm mechanically challenged so i think the car will be going to Alfa for the belts. The belts were changed 5 years / +-30,000 miles ago - so that'll be the first job.
I'll try rope a mate in to maybe service the car and change the fluids - although the last owner knew his Alfas and had looked sfter it pretty well, he only sold it as he emigrated. The belts were changed about 30,000 miles ago - so that'll be the first job.
I wss very impressed with the drive home, engines nice , road tax due tomorrow , so i think my £560 Alfa 147 just doubled in cost !
But.....it's a lovely looking car for the money
