Help required please. I don't know much about car insurance apart from the fact that its a b@stard! I'm currently looking for a car to insure just for the summer until mid september. Can I do this? I'm also wondering if there are any ways or "tricks" to reduce the premium a bit. Would adding both my parents as named drivers help? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Matt

I once tried adding my flatmate to my insurance to see what it would do. I declared her as flatmate not girlfriend and I had no intention of letting her drive my car.

Couldn't believe it when they said it would reduce the premium by £50, especially as I had a clean record and she had an SP30!

What the hell?

Best thing to do for such a limited time...

Get the car insured by your parents with you as a named driver, pay the premium on monthly installments then cancel it in September.

Assuming you're not worried about building up an NCB, then this should work out about the cheapest..

Hi Matt,

Sorry to hear about your accident.....

car insurance, could try to put a new policy in your folks names and have you as a named driver -don't know for certain though. How about getting a classic car for the summer? It was £250 to insure my Spitfire 1500 fully comp for a year. That was for unlimited mileage and I have zero NCD!.

That might be worth a try then. Cheers. Does anyone know any really cheap (insurance wise) cars? I'm currently looking at (Don't laugh!!) 2CVs and Fiat Pandas!! I don't care if its slow, or ugly, or boring, or uncomfortable, or unreliable. It just has to be an A to B (eventually) type thing.

Cheers
Matt

Get a Spitfire!, under-rated compared to MG, therefore cheap. Fantastic looks, leaky roof, smell of petrol and no brakes, what more could you want from a British car.....

Have as big a posible excess, sounds silly but I personally would rather give that money to a garage than some robdog insurance mob. to double my excess to 500 saved me £400

They're having a laugh!, presumably a Mini will be a similar price? Have you tried for a limited mileage policy yet?

I've got my mini on a limited mileage policy with hastings direct and its a ridiculously cheap price, may be worth speaking to them?

Matt.

That was limited to 1000 miles but they said it wouldn't make much difference if it was unlimited. A mini 1000 in group 2, the panda is group 1 so it wouldn't make much difference. That quote was for third party only by the way.

Insurance is not only based around what sort of (telegraph)pole dancer you are, it's also how easy the car is to repair. Go for an old Uk produced car like a fiesta (another one) or corsa or something like that - especially with two hamsters under the bonnet for motive power, and you should see a distinct reduction in premiums. Incidentally, did you make a claim for the dead fiesta? If not, that shouldn't effect your premium.

Doesn't always work, though. I tried upping the excess on my policy a couple of years ago and the quote was higher than for the £100 excess I already had!

Fcuking hell Matt, this is not good!!!!

Think about the classic car route. A Spit in reasonable nick will cost you £2k, plus £250 for insurance for the year. It'll need about £250 of work on it per year (less if you do it yourself, including services etc), but will be worth the same price when you sell. And you will be able to sell it easily. Mine went to the first person who saw it for £200 more than I initially paid for it

Would you rather give the 2k to the insurer or for a nice looking car?

IMPORTANT PLESE READ

Could people on PH stop advising people to put their car in their parents name and have them added as a named driver as a valid way of reducing their premium.

If the car is involved in an accident and the insurance company is suspicious they will investigate further. It is not unknown for an insurance company to prosecuded these people for fraud. They do use private detectives.
Detective "whos car is the XYZ"
Your nextdoor neibour "Oh thats the sons car, he's always out washing it, loves that car he does"
Detective "thanks madam".

I would not like someone to read these messages and think that it is a valid way to reduce your premium, If they find out you could be left with nothing or worse a big fine, possible a prison sentence.

It is Fraud and they dont like it.
