Mini first 1.6 tuning tips?

I have been thinking about a mini first 1.6 but understand they aren't a particularly quick car, is there any tuning tips or things you can do to increase the performance relatively cheaply and easily?

Surely you would be better off just buying a faster MINI? Cooper or Cooper S?

I have the same dilema, but I want to do some competitions in a 1600cc NA class so no supercharger for me. Interesting to hear what power they can genuinly make with a little gentle modding
