So having bought a Hybrid a couple of months back, with the intention of riding it every so often with the wife, I've ended up riding it to work for the past month or so and really enjoying it, even going out and doing 48 miles on it one Sunday morning. It did make me realise that I needed something a bit more suitable for the job, especially as I've booked myself in for an 84 mile Sportive at the end of October.

Cue my mate Russell who works for Madison suggesting he'd be able to build me up a road bike on a serious budget, so the wheels were set in motion last week and we finally got everything together for the build last night.

The frame is from a Ridgeback Platinum tourer/winter bike, it was in a rather bland shade of blue, but is fairly light and perfect for the purpose, so I took this to a local shotblasting firm and had it bead blasted, it came back with a nice satin aluminium finish, though I'll have to see how this weathers and perhaps get round to treating it with something:

Forks are 3T carbon ones he found belonging to a Cervelo of some description:

One of the bits I've actually had to pay for, Compact 105 chain ring and some SPDs:

Wheels are some prototype carbon jobs from a few years back that he snaffled up and have been lying around in his garage, just happened to have a 10 speed Ultegra cassette on the back, as he's recently upgraded to 11 speed. Brakes are Tiagra:

All but finished, remaining components are all 105:

Fairly happy with the weight:

And just before I hopped on it for work this morning, I realise I'm shooting from the wrong side and various other rules are being broken, including the saddle bag:

Very happy with it, seriously quick compared to the hybrid, had PBs across the board on Strava and one top 10, time to start hunting down the KOMs!

That looks great, I'm jealous.

How much does it owe you all in?

Parts-wise I think I paid about £230, spent another £40 having it bead-blasted and I have the wheels on long-term loan, but will give him £125 for them when I get paid. Looking forward to getting out for a decent ride on Sunday morning.

Brilliant.

Now take it all to bits and get some lacquer on the frame before it gets wet.

I've read all sorts of differing feedback on what will happen to the aluminium, so I'm going to leave it for a while and see what happens. Have put a layer of car wax on it for now and will observe the patina with interest.

If only we all had mates who worked for Madison!, thats a great looking bike and those wheels are a fantastic coup for £125, mind you the forks are probably worth near enough that as well!

Ha, will check his garage when I'm next over.

Very close to getting my first KoM on it last night, second fastest behind none other than the mate who built it for me, he must have slipped in some sort of speed retardation device when I wasn't looking.

There are some pretty cool chemicals to treat aluminium so that it won't oxidise and will maintain that bead-finish, or you could brush/polish parts to get special effects. you just clear-coat it after the chemical wash and it will last like a painted finish.

what you mustn't do is just clearcoat over naked aluminium, it will look good at first, but if it doesn't just chip off, it will definitely turn black over time.
