I have the original handbook for my 1977 Taimar, according to this the cars fuse box should consit of two 35amp fuses and two 50amp fuses. One of my fuses blew the other night (I lost all night running lights) upon inspection of my fuse box all four fuses were only 25amp. Should I replace all the fuses with the correct amp? I've located a stockist for the 35amp, but struggling finding a 50amp fuse.

In my opinion (qualified electrical engineer - but not automotive) you should protect your circuit wiring with the lowest fuse rating possible, i.e. if the lights were happily running on a 25A fuse then just replace with the same it could have been a number of things that made it blow that may never happen again. If you use a 25A and it blows again relatively quickly then uprate to 35A and try it for a while. I would be reluctant to use a 50A fuse on something that had been operating perfectly happily on a fuse at half the rating because if you do have a fault the 50A fuse may be too highly rated to blow under fault condition and you may end up with fried wiring or worse.

P.S. My running lights fused on my M about 4 months ago, I never discovered why and merely replaced with the same rated fuse that had blown and it has never happened again - yet.

I replaced all the headlamp lighting circuits, dipped and main beam with fusible relays, very simple to wire in and stops all that heavy current going through the switchgear. These are about £5 each from Autolec. I bought mine from Roadrunner in Nottingham. The fusible relay has its own bullet fuse so you can put a correctly rated unit in.

You can at the same time beef up the wiring to the headlamps and run some decent output bulbs!

Did the same for the horn and the starter motor

The 50 amp fuses are available ( We stock them). It is the norm that the headlamps that are on most cars by now have been uprated to H4 units and whist the main loom wiring (28 strand) in good condition is up to taking the load, the bonnet wiring loom (9 strand) is not and should be rewired to suit (14 strand), you would then include a 50 amp fuse in the headlamp circuit. However the heat build up in a fuse box that has a poor connection will cause even the 50 amp fuse to blow. I suggest that you clean the fuse box connections (we acid dip ours) and use 35 amp/17 amp contuinuous load fuses as this will protect the system. Unless you are sure that the wiring is up to taking the load. (It is good for you to know that 9 strand bullet connectors appear as a bullet with no markings on the body of the bullet 14 strand has 2 rings, 28 strand has a straight flanged end and 44 strand has a flared flange end.......These are the discriptions of the bullet connectors as you see them on the end of a piece of wire whilst still connected, and as ever if you do not understand electric's get a auto electrian who understands TVR electric's in to do it.....or give me the job
