What's that all about!!!

Pity about the traffic this aft down the M6, this little bugger was fast!

- met up with driver at Welcome Break - said it was V8??? 5.2??? 380HP???

Any one shed any light? I'm a bit deaf when it comes to German.

Also Lovely Nissan turbo thingy driven by blond bird (and bloody quickly too!), nicely.

Oooooooooo, a 928 is one of my dream machines.

Why oh why oh why don't Porsche re-introduce a new one using the Cayenne's 450bhp V8?

928 GTS is a 5.4 ltr 32v Alloy V8 with 360 bhp. 0 - 60 in 5.2 secs, 169 mph. Not a bad sports car either !

I've got one of those, a rare manual, red with black interior. The engine's been rebuild and has had ceramic liners put in, it's still tight but it's already putting out appreciably more than standard.

Lots of fun, especially on a track. Most people who know what it is think it's a lardy tourer. Well yes, it is, but it handles damn well for a lardy tourer. Especially once you've uprated shocks/springs/engine bay strut/front anti-roll bar links.

I agree they are loads of fun, however IMHO they are a GT (as is a Cerbera), not a true sports car. I know I will now be shot down in flames but to me a sports car is a fast, open 2 seater that is very chuckable as in TVR Tamora and Porsche Boxster.

The 928 was/is an amazing feat of design - it dates back to 1971 don't you know! The 'Weissach' axle was something journos waffled on about for years and it was always a car ahead of it's time. The original 4.5 litre engine is anaemic by modern standards but in 1977 could stay roughly in touch with a 308 even though I think people always thought it's aspirations a little less flamboyant, citing the Merc 450SLC and Jag XJS as favoured target markets...daft comparison because the big GT was always 10 times as dynamic as these two barges. The 4.7 engine heralded the apperearnce of the S and S2 derivates and it was the latter that gave me my first taste of supercardom. The 5.0 litre S4 seduced me further but things got serious with the GT (manual only?) and the later howitzer 5.4 litre GTS. Anyone who doubts their ability probably hasn't been taken round a track courtesy of a racer but in any guise one of the finest value pedigrees by any standard. Once described as having 'Rubenesque' curves I think the very essence of classical elegance that only Ferrari finally eclipsed with their delightful - if a little pricey - 456GT. (And having though about that, you'd be amazed how good the basic 928 chassis is even in such august company, if loosing out a little on sheer lustiness.) So an impeccable car and I'll never tire of beating it's drum - the 928 is a genuinely affordable supercar which everyone should try. (I sold my 928S4 to a rep who was opting out of his company Vectra! You should've seen the grin on his face during 'take off' on the test drive! Good choice!)

derestrictor,
I totally agree with you. I have had two 928s (manual) and sold the last one about 10 years ago. A couple of weeks ago I got rid of my Griffith and bought a one owner (sadly auto) S4 with only 39k mls. It was such a low mileage, perfect in every way car that I decided I could learn to deal with the autobox. I had forgotten what a great car the 928 is. I was speaking to a dealer friend who has always been involved with Porsche, Ferrari etc., and always used to use a 928 himself. He reckons that the only thing to come close is a Ferrari 550, but dealing with £5k service bills takes the fun out of that.I think it is quite astounding that a car first sold in 1977 can still hold its own 25 years later, and does not feel like an old museum piece. How the 928 did not take over from the 911 as Porsche had intended is beyond me.

Howdy doody, RUF3!
I think had Porsche REALLY developed the 928 your wish may have materialized but the will was never really there. I remember reading SO many phenomenal reviews over the years about 'the shark' and drooling at the thought of it's autobahn storming capabilities. The term 'under-engineered' is a term often and correctly associated with Pork land in general, never truer than with the 928. Even 350 BHP in final GTS guise was risibly low: this chassis was divine and felt like 450 BHP or so would not have been problematic. And planted at speed? Yessiree! The grippy bitumen of the German autobahn north of the Rhine Falls allowed me to seriously stretch the old S4's legs (auto I'm afraid) some years ago and it felt like an irresistable tidal wave of torque slug...ooft! {In fact, a biker mate who was with me for the trip drove the car up through the French Alps - he was amazed by it's effortless pull as it loped up through the esses...)It seemed to just stop at 160 MPH which was frustrating because it was SO composed and serene (albeit with admittedly massive [but wonderful!] trademark tyre roar through the cabin) - I NEEDED 200 MPH that day!
So why did the 911 prevail? Some sort of conspiracy I reckon but anyhow, after various motoring flirtations I landed back on Planet Pork and by the late nineties 928 power was just too lacking: Japanese washing machines could run rings round them (I know 'cos I tried one for a short while) and I had done the TVR thing. It HAD to be a turbo and now I know what I know I can appreciate the mystique: 911s ARE unique but never equal and some are less equal than others...
One day though, I'd like an immaculate 928S2 in the stable, or maybe an original 928 4.5, just for purity's sake. What a car.

Ahh Yes the 928. My favourite variant was in black with a red light on the roof, it had a low / high gear shift with a red nitro button on the side.

Some of you may recognise this discrption it was the arcade game Chase HQ, even now me and my brothers still want a 928 even though we couldn't drive then and haven't driven one yet. Astounding what the effect one game can have on you.

Really Deristrictor? Not often enough for me to have ever come across it. I have however frequently heard Porsches described as over engineered.
