Can this be done? (Yacht chartering)

You know those holidays where you rent a 30 foot yacht in the Med and float around for a week or 2?

Well as far as I can see, they always come with a skipper, who kips on board with you.

Can these things be charted and self skippered?

I am guessing not, but all advice appreciated.

Thanks, but thats a tad out of my league!

I maybe in cloud cuckoo land of course, but flotilla hols are around £2k a week, so I was looking at that kind of range really.

I have found a few sites now, so it looks like it can be done.

Its just an idea at the min though.

Yes, it can be done easily provided you hold the appropriate quals (usually a day skipper and one competent crew). I've done it several times and had a great time out of Fethiye in Turkey but Croatia also comes highly recommended. Looking at around £2k a week for something like a Bavaria 40ish ft from memory. Bit of a tub but great fun throughout. I can also highly recommend a site that would be good if you were looking for a 'late sail'

Flotilla holidays have a lead yacht and crew, you have your own yacht, along with other holiday makers in their yachts. The lead yacht has a set ittenary which you follow. I've done a couple with Neilson. You can do do a course a week before the flotilla, the Greek Neilson resort is superb, called The Retreat in Sivota. I've been there twice now. It's nice to do a week at the resort and a week on a yacht. Be around £2k

Yep, lead crew on their own yacht, all the holiday makers are on their own yachts. We had a really nice 1 year old Dufour 325, just my girlfriend and I onboard.

The first time I went to the Retreat, it was just my girlfriend and I. We spent a week at the resort playing with the watersports, and then a week on a yacht touring the islands with the rest of the flotilla.

Second time I went (photos here: https://plus.google.com/photos/1171933579491521218... ) I went with my family. We just spent the time at the resort, but we did do a day charter with some of the staff and my family.

The staff at Neilson are great. On our second trip the staff remembered us from the year before and were happy to take us out on the yacht for a day trip. I really enjoyed it, the staff are happy to mix the holiday makers during the evenings too.
