I was out doing a recee ride of my upcoming Triathlon course to set a benchmark time (despite having a royal hangover) and just to see what the course is like.

After a couple of miles at the top of a small gradient I get passed by a chap on a serious bit of kit (Bianchi of some description). We exchange greetings and he goes on his way. I keep up with him on the flats and downhill but he loses me up the grades.

I catch him up again and we start a reasonable descent. I am keeping back so as not to draft him (not allowed in tris), suddenly I am aware of someone else passing me. A chap on a solid steel framed mountain bike with friction shift gears, no helmet, flat pedals, dressed in a tracksuit, slightly overwieght, peadling like mad, comes streaming passed me. I glanced at the Garmin and we were doing a shade over 30 MPH. After passing me he then sets his sights on the chap in front but loses that battle.

I caught him on the flat and took him again, he gave me a st eating grin as I went passed and I gave him a respectful thumbs up.

Cool story bro and all that but it made me laugh.

The extra weight helps overcome air resistance etc so heavier = faster downhills

I have a friend who is at least 6 stone heavier than me and I have to pedal to keep up with him when he coasts downhill.

Must have meant 60, as I'm sure he said he cruises at 26mph on the flat.

I did say that. I also said somewhere that I generally st myself at anything over 35 mph smile

I did clock 40 mph recently though, hit a divot in the road and a little bit of wee came out.

Can't ride up hill (to fat), can't ride downhill (to scared). Pretty good on the flats though. Maybe I should move to Holland, or Norfolk.

ETA - I did also back track slightly and say cruising may have been pushing it!

Yeah, I know :-) But once you've said it, it's fair game for a ribbing later. It is PH after all.
