I am planning on driving from Annecy to Lake Lucerne (Gersau) and then down to Bologna. With a one night stopover in Gersau.

I want to avoid as many of the long tunnels as I can. Is this sensible, or will it take forever navigating the 'old' roads?

If so, perhaps I can miss out on a partial list of tunnels, and if so, which ones are best avoided? but have an alternative road that will not lose much more time than if I used the relative tunnel.

Open to suggestions.

I've just moved from Geneva to Annecy, with family in the north of italy, so know the area quite well.

I've not driven the route you mention, but I imagine you should't be hampered too much by tunnels. The ones you really want to avoid are the ones under the alps (Mont Blanc, St Bernard) but these only really become a problem if you're heading east-west, if that makes sense (perhaps something to think about on your return?).

Lucerne to Bologna does of course allow you to do the Davos to Stelvio road and then head down to Bologna from there, if you do, would recommend a stop in Verona or better still Mantua.

I did think about that, but according to googlemaps it is an 8 hour drive... and if I didn't like the thought of being stuck behind a motorhome down the stelvio pass. So I am thinking of just going straight south down the E35 as far as the St Gothard tunnel and then go over the top via the old pass for a bit of scenic driving. According to googlemaps, it will take about 4.5 hours (not allowing for the usual delays...)
