...Or Herts-type area (I can't find a map with the county line on it!)

The far end of the A507 must be in with a shout. Maybe the B1051 (technically in Essex, I think) if you prefer something a bit more narrow and hot hatchy?

Always loved a blat along the 507 between Cottered and Baldock.

My other favourite stretch is a short one between Hitchin and Codicote; the B656. Quite a fast road but a very fun one in the right conditions.

Just a bit further North the B660 (Bedfordshire rather than Hertfordshire)

A507 between Buntingford and Baldock is outstanding. Hitchin to Codicote, Hitchin to Barton Le Clay too.
B660 is in Beds of course and not as good as the A507. Some great roads around the back of Royston and out towards Saffron Walden

Surely the roads that JC drove used in the last two episodes of Top Gear? wink

Just down the road from me and one of my favourite roads. Can easily combine it with an A10 blast and the 'rally roads' around Hertford, Newgate Street, Cuffley & Essendon etc. as well for a nice long, fun drive. Also have the Weston Hills tunnel near Baldock if you fancy a bit of induction echo smile

Where the 507 abruptly ends/turns with another road, follow the road past the farm and keep on it, it opens up beautifully and drops you back on the 505 eventually. I cross the 505 there and loop up through back to Royston over the lanes - Although I bottomed out on a really nasty downhill bit which went on to blind bumps around there somewhere....

Its a bit bumpy to begin though , then a village, then its rather straight. So apart from that its great wink

I like the A414 between Hertford and Hatfield as well for a blast

My daily the commute in the VX. A half decent road surface and it would surpass the A507 imo, which coincidentally made up my commute before work moved so I've been quite lucky with my commutes.

There's something odd about the A507. Every time I drive it in the eastbound direction I swear I get stuck behind the same red Peugeot 405 estate. Spooky.

I now commute on the B158 every day. It does have some nice bits, but I've always had a profound respect for blind corners. And quarry trucks. Got overtaken by a gorgeous Ferrari 599 on the first straight a few days ago and it made my morning.

Loads of good roads around the Thaxted type area of Essex if we're blurring the boundaries a bit too.

Oh, and I was almost tempted to keep this one to myself, but the last bit of the B1004 from Much Hadham to Bishops Stortford is superb. wink

Ghost Peugeots Eh? ....Possible.

Question is, is it better east-west or west-east?

Sssshhhh man! nono that road isn't very good at all. In anyway shape or form. And it's very highly policed. With at least 5 speed cameras.

Honest.

On a serious note, another great road, with superb sight-lines is the road northwards towards Albury from the A120 Little Hadham lights. That takes you into the 'square' boundaried by the A120 to South, A10 to East, M11 to West and A505 to North - a lot of fun to be had 'in there'....driving

Ahh, now that's intriguing. I investigated some of the roads south of that area - around Widford - but the visibility wasn't particularly conducive to enthusiastic motoring (especially in a low-slung Caterham), never headed north, though. Will have to check that out.

When I get a chance that is ... The TVR is now back on the road, but it's still living at my parents' house (in Devon) while I get the garage sorted up here. That means the most exciting thing I've got access to currently is a Rover 75 estate.

Definitely west to east IMHO. I just love the really twisty bit before and after it does the dogleg around the farm.

Not today though! Down to one lane for much of it as they're 'resurfacing' it. The brain-dead idiots from Herts CC strike again - they're putting that surface down which has loose chippings and which relies on traffic to bed it in. 'Warning Skid Risk - Max Speed 20mph'...

The contempt I have for Herts CC, East Herts DC, and Herts Highways knows no bounds - a bigger bunch of utterly myopic, clueless, self-serving, ignorant muppets you would be hard pressed to find..shoot

Don't worry, it's not just Herts CC that does it. Cambs does it too. However, hit a stretch with no cars in front of you to chip your screen and it just adds to the fun smile

Was much much worse yesterday, that's my commute home.

Pretty sure the traffic lights at tesco round about were all stuck on green too!

Don't even get me started on the A414. smile

I thought I'd have a nice link to the A1 now I've moved to Hertford. Instead, I have to crawl through the town and then sit in a queue for ages to join the A1 at Welwyn/Hatfield.

Back on topic, Higham Rd that runs from Apsley End (north of Hitchin) to the A6 is short but sweet. It joins up nicely with the B655 and the B656 mentioned above. And then you're not too far from the A507...

Sorry if you already know this but if you drive past County Hall (on your right) and take a left at the roundabout at the bottom of the hill this takes you on the back roads towards / past Essendon. You can take one of numerous route deviations also and can then hit the A1 anywhere from Hatfield Tesco's through to the University junction or even carry on and go to the M25 directly through Potters Bar. Hope this helps.

That's my current drive to work. smile

I still have to chug through London later on, but I love starting the day with the B158. I'm warned that'll all change when the schools go back, though...

If I used the A1 more regularly I probably would use it as a cut through to the A414. As far as I can see there's no way to alleviate the almighty mess that happens at Welwyn/Hatfield when everyone queues for junction 4, though?
