Am I making a mistake?

Looking at trading my '98 450 Chimaera for a '97 M3 Evo convertible. Am I mad??

Looking for something just as quick as the Chimaera, but not having to worry about silly niggles that automatically come with the TVR. Plus I'm missing a/c, abs, and power steering! (must be getting old....).

What's the servicing cost like? Anything I should be looking for?

IMHO - yes (as in mad)

E36 M3 was the least attractive (in all respects). I'd look at later E46 330's for the same price (it's a better car) - or push out the boat and get the E46 M3. It's in a different league.

an M3 would be better... if you want something that stands out find a nice Merc CLK 430. or even an C Class AMG. IMO, of course....
