Were you accepted onto this years and then couldn't go so you rolled your application over to next year which guarantees you automatic entry ??

If I was rejected from the 2013 edition do I get any priority for 2014..?? I even did the 2nd chance charity ballot and still didn't get a place !!

This goes through my town so I would really like to have a go at this as it looked fun. However I don't have a road bike and have never had one. No experience of riding on roads either, I normally just do short journeys around town and tow paths.

I need a new challenge and watching the guys at the weekend go past has piqued my interest. Won't have much time to train but I guess that just adds to the challenge!

I suspect that this years success will make the ballot pretty huge though? anyone know the ratio of accepted/rejected from this years race?

This year was 50,000 applications for 20,000 places. Should be some more places next year though, and the good news for you is they are apparently going to try and encourage more new riders.

You will need to train for it, 100 miles is not a walk in the park but is perfectly achievable if you do your prep.

I say put your name down for it, it was a truly amazing event and one I'll definitely be keen to do again in future.

I think I will give the ballot a go then.

I am sure I can handle the distance. To be honest training for it would dilute the challenge a bit, one of the attractions for doing it is the opportunity to ride on roads with no traffic to spoil things.

Without being rude, although 100 miles on a bike is by no means difficult, to say training would dilute the challenge comes across as being a little arrogant!
Surely the challenge is to go as quickly as possible, and to do so will need a little training?

How the fk does that work? How many (exact numbers??) registered/started, and more importantly, how the fk many people failed to turn up at the start line? If the figures I've seen about the place are to be believed, upwards of 4,000 fkwits applied for a place, got one in the ballot, but thought little of just not bothering, and depriving someone else of a great opportunity. Yes, there'll be some who have reasonable reasons for not turning up, like late injury, family bereavement, accident in the car on the way to the start, but 4,000+ good reasons? I don't buy into that at all. Was the lack of a full entry list due to low take up of 'bonded' charity places? If so they should have given them back, for re-allocation. I know someone on this forum mentioned he'd not be able to take his place, so had to hand it back, and that's fine. Plans change, I get that, but if 4,000 riders failed to start, that's 20% of the field, FFS. If you weren't sure you could manage the distance, or make the start line on the day in question, why apply???

As it was, when I didn't get a place in the ballot, I booked something else for that weekend, so a 'reserve list' at event HQ wouldn't have been any use to me, and such an idea is close to unworkable, anyway, but to get a place and then just to chicken out without informing the event organiser demonstrates the lack of respect for the organisers and fellow applicants that is so prevalent everywhere these days. wkers.

Where are you getting the 15,000 number from? I think the total is higher than that.
