Hi all,

Im new so dont bite wink

I want to get a road bike. I have been to halfords and done a bit of research and im not sure what to go for. I dont want to spend a lot and I know this will limit what I can get. I have been looking at 200-300 but needing a 47cm frame im quite limited.

I have seen a diamondback on ebay and a raleigh pursuit also but having read some reviews it is off putting.

Can you peeps help me? I dont know which bikes are better and which to avoid.

Cheers

Triban 3 from Decathlon seems to be the answer any time this is asked, think they are £299 make sure you get one of the UK versions with the carbon fork. Supplies are dwindling apparently so finding one maybe an issue

Allow me to introduce the concept of the Bike Shaped Object (BSO).

These are things you can buy in many places such as ebay, sport-wear shops, catalogues and car accessory retailers. They look like bikes, they cost nearly as much as bikes but if you attempt to use one as a bike it will cause you endless pain and grief. Previously mostly limited to full-suspension mountain bike replicas, road bike lookalikes have recently started to appear as well.

To avoid these, you are going to be looking at the upper end of your budget ~£300 is about as cheap as a new road bike gets these days. The Triban is a very good shout and the Carrera bikes from Halfords are perfectly usable if screwed together right (depends on the store IME). If you can up your budget a little then a whole other world of options opens up as well.

The other option is to go second-hand, but if you are not sure what you are looking for I'd probably avoid this for now.

Feel free to post up anything you like the look of. We'll happily give you ten contradicting opinions on whether its a good deal or not!

Exactly the advice I wished I'd had myself some months back. I'd have avoided some experiences that damn near put me off cycling instead of becoming completely hooked. Ah well we live and (hopefully) learn....

One other to add is that there are a lot of the red triban 3s on Gumtree etc (I believe these were the carbon fork models) at around the two hundred quid point. On every conversation I've seen on every forum I've looked at, those are what everyone recommends as a starter budget road bike.

The Dawes looks nicer, much nicer, but the triban has a much better spec....
Looking at the bikeradar review and a couple of others the Dawes didn't review very well while the trban practically gets a halo :-)

Then again I've no room to talk, ended up with a carrera tdf.... It was VERY cheap though... (Sticking to my excuses) :-)
