Considering how many cars I have owned and still own, it's amazing that I haven't had an Alfa before.
So, needing a car without a clutch pedal, I bought a 147 Selespeed with new MoT, new brakes, for £500. Drove it 150 miles home and really love it! Sorted a brake problem, and got the a/c working as soon as I got home.
Although not a massive FWD fan, I really love this - even more than the Clio 182 I had. So an evening on Ebay has sourced odds and sods like rear wiper arm, handbook, better exhaust, and a catch for the glovebox.
It has had a new cambelt allegedly, but I will be replacing that soon.

Shed works! Go from a £22K Lotus Esprit V8 to this and having a ball.
The equipment is a bit good too. Bose Hi Fi, heated leather seats, electric most things. Oh he had just changed the oil and filter too.

So, what are the best handling mods (anti -roll bars?) and best cheap performance mods?

Pics soon. Nice Dark Red and a 3 door. With Tan leather seats.

Best cheap performance mods...............service it

You can change the exhaust, pop a panel filter in, maybe a decat, you would be looking at maybe an extra 12/15bhp, thing is with these engines for 'cheap' you will not get great gains, there are a few that have been supercharged, pushing around 200bhp, not cheap though.
I had pretty much the same engine (without the selespeed) in a GTV, it had a sports cat, better rear system, K&N in stock housing and a fancy Alfatune chip, no massive power increase but drove better throughout, to buy those bits new....£600

The suspension works well with Eibach springs and Koni shocks add Ferodo DS2500 pads and it will stop much better as well

can you do the work yourself, if not you have to add fitting costs.

There is a very helpful section on Alfaowner specifically for 147/156

Thanks for the info. After 40+ years of being in the trade I should be able to do these things!
I guessed as much on engine mods - so I probably won't bother apart from an exhaust so I can hear it! Been serviced recently by the previous - but I will do the lot later.

One week on. £100 on a few bits, like wipers, tyres, etc. Oh about 1000 miles too! Up and down the A68 while on holiday - what a car! Just so much fun, and gets better with being thrashed too. I really love this little car. Must get it booked in for a track day or two.

So you sold the Esprit as well as me then, did the guy I sold mine to contact you about the clutch conversion?
The reason I'm scouring the Alfa site is I've ordered/buying one of the new Alfa 4C's first new car I've bought since a new BMW M5 in 1985. Came across your name so thought I'd say Hi and hope you are well.

No, nothing from him. Hmmm, thinking about the 4C too! Having said that, nearly 1000 miles in a week in the 147 and I really love it. Even did the Forest Drive through Kielder today!!

A month on, how's the shed motoring going?

Interested to hear how the normally slated Selespeed gearbox is behaving itself...

Still brilliant. Only had to replace a sidelight bulb. Now about 2000 miles, still ragging it, still loving it! The Selespeed is very good. In city (full auto) mode it works well. In paddle mode it is very good. You need to time the changes about right, and lift the throttle at the right time. Not on 1-2 change though.

Dunno if I mentioned, but removed all the audio and the back seats and saved 50kg!

A great Shed.

Great minds think alike, I just did the same and bought a 147 last week also, although I paid £560 for mine...looks like i got ripped off smile

Red, black leather, heated seats, MOT till May 2014, new tyres and exhaust at the end of 2013.

Just remembered. Doubled its value the other day. Fitted a new set of plugs and filled the tank with VPower!
