I have a day off on Friday and am just thinking of something to do.

We have recently moved out to Hampshire and so I am thinking of exploring a bit further afield.

I see Sandbanks mentioned a lot on here. Is there anything to do or see there?

I.e. is there a nice restaurant for lunch?

The route appears to be 1 hour 20 mins so is it worth the journey?

Go to Swanage via the ferry, you will see as much of sandbanks as there is to see and have a better day out.

Sandbanks is nice. It gets pretty busy, though.

As far as restaurants go, it's worth taking a look at Cafe Shore on Shore Road or Jazz Cafe on Banks Road. It's also quite nice to take a coffee at The Haven Hotel and watch the world go by.

You could always take the chain ferry across to Studland and have a mosey around the beaches there, which are much more quiet than Sndbanks beach

Where abouts in Hampshire are you?

A lovely day out is to drive down to Lymington, catch the ferry over to Yarmouth as a foot passenger and take lunch on the back lawn of The George Hotel, overlooking the Solent. Then, take a walk up the beach towards the Solent approaches.

If on Sandbanks I would go to the Harbour Heights Hotel if the weather is good. It's just round the corner from the main Sandbanks car park. Sit on the terrace outside and enjoy this wonderful view!!!

Edited to add: get the chain ferry to studland and within 100 yards you have the Shell Bay restaurant which is cheap and in a lovely location too.

This all sounds very posh, but if you're new to Hampshire you might want to consider a leisurely stroll down the ' Mutant Mile', to see the real Hampshire.

If you get peckish they have at least 2 fried chicken restaurants mmm.

Hartley Wintney is lovely. Most of the good pubs around North Hampshire are tucked away in little villages etc, but you'll find them in time. I've lived in Hampshire pretty much all my life, so know it fairly well!

My friends used to live in Hartley Wintney - on a very good day they could get to me near Sabdbanks in an hour and 10 mins. One did it in 45 minutes once but the less said the better.

Whatever you do - do not follow the Poole signs. Go via the A31 and A338 to Bournemouth. This will be much quicker.

Nice one Gary! Reservation has been made. Not sure the family bus is up for the 45 minute challenge ;-)

Right, I am going to have to check out mutant mile. "Tea stain" and "One Ear Willy" sound like quite the tourist attractions!

Let me know any good pubs Schmalex! I'm quite fond of the Watermill in Odiham at the moment.

I'd add Regginas in Botley and also the fox and hounds in Crawley, Winchester to that list

Studland is much nicer. Sandbanks is alright, really busy this time of year. Poole is worth a look around. The harbour is nice but the rest is nothing special.

consider cycling sandbanks ...on the recent hot days the traffic's standstill around there with a studland ferry queue of atleast an hour..or get down there early
