Garmin Edge.....which one...
Discussion
Well, i know they do quite a few of them, the main ones i'm looking at are the 800, the 510 and the 810 but i'm struggling to decide which one i need.
now.....i'm currently using a garmin forerunner 205 on the bike and at the minimum i'd want all of the data which that can show (so, that'll be any of them then) but i use it to follow a "breadcrumb" map when i plot a route on garmin connect but would like something mounted on the bike which can do this, and let's face it, the 205 isn't great at doing this.
i'm not overly fussed about HRM or cadence (though i guess it'd be nice) but mainly would like something with mapping ability too.
i don't need it as navigation as such, but just something to which i can upload a course to, and it will show me a map with clear instructions on where to go.
Thoughts on my best bets?
Thanks

I'm researching GPS units with a view to buying soon.
Edge 500 with HRM and cadence for £139.99 http://www.runonline.co.uk/shop/garmin-edge-500.ht...
Edge 800 with HRM and cadence for £292.99 http://www.runonline.co.uk/shop/garmin-edge-800-wi...
I've not used the 'RunOnline' website myself, so not a recommendation as such, just cheap promo prices on a new line (for them).
HandTec will do the Edge 800 with HRM and cadence @ £274.59
If you need the mapping, the Edge 800 with O.S. Maps (NO cadence sensor) is £315.49 on the Halfords website. Evans do it (with the sensor/HRM, I think) for £359.99
The prices do fluctuate quite a bit. Some of the sites were cheaper a couple of weeks ago, with promos running. I kind of wish I'd bought then, but hey-ho.
Remember to budget for a Garmin 'Out Front' mount (£25ish), a K-Edge mount (£35ish) or a BarFly mount (£20ish) so you look "Pro as f
k"
It might be worth a look for 'refurbished' units either direct from Garmin, or via the retailers, as these can be cheaper, but not so much so that buying one is a 'no brainer'.

All those mounts clamp to the bar near the stem, and place the unit level with and immediately ahead of the stem, so they might avoid the cable position you describe?

If/when I get a GPS I'll probably go for the K-Edge in gunmetal, to try to match my Ultegra groupset (pathetic, I know. But really blingy). I know you get a stem mount with the 'rubber bands' in the box, but I'm not keen on the idea of entrusting the safety of an expensive gadget to the strength of a pair of rubber 'O' rings. #irrational

if you look here on the left part of the handle bar (right side of the image) you can see where the cable runsIf/when I get a GPS I'll probably go for the K-Edge in gunmetal, to try to match my Ultegra groupset (pathetic, I know. so not sure whether that would cause an issue or not...?
cheers
edit - this bike also has similar routing (another bianchi, cable routing looks the same) and shows you can at least fit a smaller edge to the stem which is better than having to look at my wrist when i want some info....

How long does the battery life last on these things? I'm using a Garmin Forerunner 405 which is more for running, max battery is around 5/6 hours so no good for longer rides.
the 810 says 17 hours. as above, i'm using a 205 forerunner and did 100 miles today which (including punctures, stops, faffing about at the beginning and end it was on for around 7-7.5 hours and it did alert me for low battery but it did survive. these last much longer.E38Ross said:
My only concern is with the mounting because of the way the cables are routed, the mount would need to go round the handlebars and a brake cable which runs underneath.... Shouldn't be a problem but something to think about.
Just bend the cable out of the way! If it's too tight what with cable, mount and bar tape, re-jig the bar tape.I've got a older 705 with free maps installed, some friends have the 800/810, to be quite honest the mapping/routing function is no where near as advanced as a TomTom or Google maps on the iPhone. These days I just use the Garmin for the essential data on speed/distance etc and uploading to Strava, if I think I'm lost I just pull out the iPhone from the jersy pocket and can orientate my self quite quickly.
