Road Bike for around £2k
Discussion
I also have a 2011 Defy 3. After reading many reviews and looking around shops I'm trying two bikes tomorrow to determine frame size and then buying whichever feels most comfortable.
Either a Cannondale CAAD10 105 for £1400 or a Cannondale SuperSix 105 for £1800. Not fussed whether I end up with the carbon or alu frame, just whatever feels best.

So I'm currently riding a Giant Defy 1 from 2011.
I'm looking at upgrading a little, potentially not to race or timetrial but just to train more.
At the moment I'm looking at Focus or Canyon variants, any other suggestions?
Cheers
What is your budget and what do you like/dislike about the Defy. Canyon bikes are very highly rated but it really depends on your needs.I'm looking at upgrading a little, potentially not to race or timetrial but just to train more.

Looking forward to what you end up on. I got the caad10 and it's a great bike. Not that I've ridden loads but it feels good to me. There are hundreds of choices and none will be bad but you could do a lot worse than this Trek Madone 3.5 for starters.... similar geometry to the Giant so it should be comfy over longer distances, ultegra drivetrain, 17.5 lbs, full carbon and down from £2k to £1500...
Have a look at http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/ and the Xeon RS or CRS. Their bikes and service seem to be very similar to Canyon's but you can custom spec everything on the bike except for the groupset.
Based on what I've read on other forums the bikes and service standards are very high, and they look to be very good value too.

Don't the CAAD10 and SuperSix share the same geometry?
It's getting very close to that time of year when big discounts come about. I tihkn i'd be tempted to wait to see what offers you can get. You might end up with a £3k bike reduced to 2k (You might not have to change the wheels then!!

OP, is your Defy a little creaky around the bottom bracket? I have replaced the bearing, had another in under warranty when the replacement didn't improve things but it still creaks under load. I may be invoking the Giant frame warranty however the bike has not been maintained by a Giant dealer so they may be reluctant to help.
Thanks
Steve

Are the bearings in external cups screwed into the frame? If so try some PTFE tape on the threads of the cups.OP, is your Defy a little creaky around the bottom bracket? How good are you with spanners? I've just (or am still in the process of) built my own bike from components. You will need a few specialist tools or may be able to borrow them from other local cyclists.
Scott CR1 Pro frame and fork (Westbrook Cycles) £450
Shimano RS80 wheels (Merlin) £331
SRAM Rival Groupset ~£430 ebay (I can recommend a seller)
or
Shimano Ultegra Groupset £540 (Merlin Cycles)
Seatpost, stem, saddle, handlebars, peddals, tyres, inner-tubes as required - I've swapped these bits from my old bike as I have 'spares' that I can replace when I sell my old bike.
Total spend for SRAM - £1211 not including sundries so circa £1300-£1400 depending on what bits you already have.
Total spend for Shimano - £1321 not including sundries so circa £1400-£1500 depending on what bits you already have.
If you also buy through TopCashBack, you can get about £20 off the frame, £10 off the wheels and I'd guess at about £19 off the Ultegra groupset.

Gone caad10 - I couldn't see any reason to pay £400 extra for the SuperSix other than being able to say I had a carbon bike. There felt to be negligible weight difference (and I can easily lose plenty off me rather than the bike) and the feel of them was no different.I'm also surprised that I felt more comfortable on the 60 frame at 6'1" as I expected to go smaller but felt too hunched up. Anyway, I wanted a more relaxed feel, I'm not taking part in TTs any time soon.
So OP, take a look at Cannondale. Some cracking bikes and you'll be able to get something fully specced with Ultegra for your budget.

Worth saying that there's a very big difference between the 2012 Synapse HM and the 2013 Synapse HM that Sagan won Gent-Wevelgem on. But that's still a stunning price for a brilliant bike.http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m7b0s6p4313/CANNONDAL...
Thanks guys, as yet had no issues with the Defy1. It seemed like a good solid first road bike.
I was also going to ask when the sales come about as it does seem a good idea to see what can be had.
I'll have a look at Cannondale's, previously looked at the 105's etc before I went for the Giant.
Too much choice and opinion in this sort of price range I think
