A while back, I couldn't get into my boot. The button above the numberplate (it's a mark 2) wasn't working. Once I'd been told about the emergency entry method, I was able to get in and the problem later turned out to be a blown fuse.

However, since that weekend, I've noticed that while the boot clicks shut and the button is working, I am able to pull the boot open with very little force (ie without pressing the button).

At first I thought the catch on the boot lid wasn't seating home properly, but having fiddled with its positioning endlessly, I don't think that is the problem.

Next I pulled the latch mechanism out and I think this is where the problem might be. As you look at it standing behind the car, it has power going into on the right and the release cables on the left. These are two cables bound together, one joins into the catch but the other (on mine) doesn't. The one that doesn't has a slight hook end to it and looks like it should connect, but i can see no way of easing the tension on the cable sufficiently to try to attach it.

I've thought about just getting a new catch mechanism, but I would still have the problem of connecting the release cables under tension.

Anyone had this problem before? Any help greatly received.

Try with the "secret way in" and check the latch closes properly... You should not be able to pull it open with the latch across. Sometimes pressing down on the lid whilst pressing the button relieves the tension if the solenoid is weak.
