I knew that later mark Spitfires were Griffon powered - but there have been a great deal of things that Eric has posted here that I haven't known and that I've been interested and grateful to read.
This is a place for people with an interest in aircraft to interact and share knowledge - which is exactly what Eric was doing. I didn't find the post pedantic at all.

I do know that the Spitfire is also powered by a Griffon however as Eric says most people, me included, assume we hear the Merlin because that is, i believe, the most common engine & the most widely known noise.
I also know that the engine noise is different although i am buggered if i can actually remember the difference!!
Eric probably was being a bit pedantic however no need to result to an insult tbh. I wouldnt insult him on here - probably just say to myself 'ffs Eric......'.
I do know that it wasnt the clipped wing example that was displayed at RIAT last weekend - i had never seen a clipped wing Spitfire in the air before last saturday.
She looked magnificent.
BTW. My neighbour was out in the Forest of Dean yesterday afternoon & he saw it as well. However he reckons it was a Hurricane!
So i really dont have a clue what it was. I am convinced it was a Spit whilst he is certain it was a Hurricane so unless someone has a photo or can positively identify what it was i guess we will never know.
I do know that whatever it was it sounded glorious.

Not that long ago our local paper "The Farnborough News", showed a picture of a Spitfire flying over Farnborough Airfield. The caption read - "The unmistakable sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin was heard once again in the skies over Farnborough as a Spitfire of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight arrives for the upcoming airshow".
Except it was a Spitfire PRXIX, which is fitted with the Griffon. So, it wasn't unmistakable at all.
The Griffon has a more grumbly, throaty sound compared to the Merlin.
