Was out in the garden yesterday afternoon and heard something different take off from Bournemouth airport. When I saw it I could have sworn it was a VC10. Are they still flying? It was such an elegant beast compared to the Ryanair and Thomson cattle wagons.

We had one come over Cardiff fairly low as well, the glide path into St Athan was right over my house so used to see them low and slow quite a bit in the past but this one was a bit to high and to the left and they dont work on them there anymore either now

Still in service with a few small airlines in Africa as well.

I've always had a soft spot for the VC10, the lack of engines slung under the wings gives it a very sleek appearance.

Was talking to a VC10 tanker crewman at Yeovilton and he seemed to imply that the delays to its Airbus replacement meant that the tanker version would be flying for a fair bit longer yet

Another 12 months or so according to an RAF bod i was talking too at RIAT on Sunday - he told me that when the VC10 did what was thought to be its final fly-past at RIAT.

He says it might still be in service, & therefore able to do another fly-past, at RIAT 2014.

Hope so because it is a majestic looking aircraft.

One flew over my parents house a few months back, which was lucky because my Dad always liked them, he died a couple of weeks later.

A planed designed in an era when you penciled out the shape of something sleek, pointy and good looking, and then passed the sketch over to your aerodynamicists to actually make it fly!

Terrific looking thing:

I think the VC-10 is more beautiful than Concorde, personally.

Not too mention the rear facing seats - a little odd the first time i flew in them but so damned comfortable.

As previous poster wrote - it just looks 'right' doesnt it? It's a beautiful looking aircraft.

I was sailing in Poole Harbour and saw it lift out of Bournemouth, it certaily looked VC10ish from that distance. I looked on my plane finder app and it wasn't showing, so I was sure it was RAF.

Always nice to see - I never did get to fly in one.

And we could have had this well before the A380 - http://www.vc10.net/History/doubledeck_super_vc10....

Never say never I guess but I really doubt it. As the maintenance facility at St Athan has now closed, there is no more Minor/Major service capability left. All the remaining frames have maintenance extensions, these wont see them past the end of 2013 so it'll take a lot of extra cash to see them fly beyond September. Given the fallout from Haddon-Cave etc I doubt you'll see it next year. I'd be happy to be wrong though as they're great aircraft to see. Also 101 Sqn (the current operators) are designated to standown in September and reform as the second Voyager Sqn - so who'll fly it and maintain it beyond then is anyone's guess!

It's scheduled to appear at a couple more airshows over the next couple of months so still a few chances to see them flying.

As Eric mentioned above, that's not the case I'm afraid. The RAF are the only VC10 operator still flying them.

That would've been terrific. I wished they'd pushed ahead with something like that. I know the costs/fuel burn/engineering issues etc meant it wasn't economically viable but I'd still love to have seen it built!

Latest rumour on RAF retirements is C1K XR808 might no longer be going to Cosford (H&S concerns about the runway not being long enough rolleyes) it might be going to Bruntingthorpe instead as the active ground runner instead of K4 ZD241. Or it might be going by road to Cosford and ZD241 might still be going to Bruntingthorpe.

Anyone have any clearer news as to what's happening?

H & S concerns about the runway? FFS.

Can you imagine this breed of fool back in 1941/42 - 'awfully sorry old chap but you cant land on that field because there is a divot of turf out of place which might cause you to have an accident. Yes i know that a nasty German has filled your plane with bullett's but the grass field might not be safe.........'

Jeez. The mind boggles sometimes. RAF pilots who know their aircraft inside out are not now trusted to land them safely by some clip board wielding idiot.

Its no wonder that we in such a mess these days. Unbelievable.

1,186m 3,890ft is pretty short, it's shorter than Duxford. Or to put it in other words close to 2000m shorter than their home at Brize Norton. I think someone there has squeaky bum syndrome.

I see your point to a degree but we're not at war so things have to be done 100% safely. Imagine the fall out if there was an incident/accident as 75+Tonnes of VC10 skids off the end of the runway Cosford?

Haddon-Cave and the subsequent MAA means they don't accept risks like they did in the past. Things have changed and changed for the better in my limited experience.

I believe the assessment of a VC10 into Cosford is still on-going regarding runway length, crash cover, aircraft weight at touchdown and braking performance etc etc. So it still might happen yet. As mentioned above one should also make it to Bruntinghthorpe although which frame will end up in which location is still in the planning stage. Should all become clear as we move towards September I imagine.

A VC10 flew into Brooklands back in the 80s. What was the runway distance in use there?
