Everyone loves a mystery.

Prowling round Goodwood on Tuesday I came across a strange piece of V8 exotica. It was being tested by 4 gentlemen (who gave the impression of sharing it). When asked what it was they replied shiftily, 'Don't know - we part exchanged it - it looked fast'.

That's all they were prepared to divulge.

As I said it was V8, sounded big and american, like a 6.3 chevy, two seater, hard top, mid engined, AP brakes, road going (lights etc), no badges, looked quite nice inside, Esprit/Diablo like dash.

Looked a bit like a cross of a XJ220, small Diablo and a kit car.

These chaps were obviously serious about their car, as it was carted off in a posh transporter.

Any ideas?

It was much older, or looked much older than those cars.

Mid 80s?

No wings, pop-up lights.

Could have been an Ecosse (their current road car).

That's it more than likely. Pantera's have very few badges, 80's looks, popups and a definite V8 rumble.

Found it!

It was a Spectre R42. Saw another racing version last Saturday, sprinting at Goodwood.

Can't seem to find much info on them anywhere on the web. Found a couple of pictures of an R45 (1998) and it looks terrific!

Spectre went bust a few years ago, but are apparently back in business; dont think they ever actually sold any road cars. The engine would have been a Ford 4.6.

Started life as GT Developments, the car was called the GTD R42 - catchy, eh? Remember seeing it at Birmingham Motor Show a few years back, along with the Lister Storm. Made in Poole, IIRC.

Spectre are now in business in Milton Keynes, I know because we share a bank manager!
