As some will know, I work about half a mile from the end of the runway at Manchester airport, and just to one side of the approach.

Today, they are taking off over the Heald Green Cheadle areas, and just looked up to see a plane well off the runway line, banking heavily to the right and heading east, but at a similar hight as if it had just taken off.

The plane was 4 engined jet, with a high mounted wing, but a low mounted tail plane. It looked about 146 size, but the tail wings were at fuselage level, and not at the top of the fin.

Anyone have any ideas what it was, and why it seemed so far off the correct flight path?

I looked on flight radar, but it did not appear, so possibly a military plane???

The Antanov that landed friday is due to take off today so it was probably that.

Yep! That fits the bill, probably a bit bigger than the 146 I suggested! Doh!

Didn't even realise it had come in to Manchester again, I was off on leave on Friday.

Yep!

That looks like it!

I think the fact it was a much bigger plane than I was expecting perhaps made it look as though it was way off the normal flight path.
