Picked up my first ever RoadBike last night....
Discussion
I had my first commute on my new bike today too, also first time with dropped handlebars and clipless shoes!
Did you have much traffic? I felt like every set of traffic lights was aiming to help me get more practice and the busses were particularly erratic but it has made the commute much more fun.
It looks good, I made the mistake of posting a pic of mine on facebook last night straight out of the box with the bell on full show.... I got no end of abuse!!

No didn't commute on it, I'm not ready for that just yet..I have a killer hill to tackle on my run to work so that will probably be a couple of weeks yet, might do a dummy run at it Sunday Morning see how it goes.Did you have much traffic? I just Went out for my usual pre-work ride, did the route in half the time and half the effort (compared to doing it on my MTB).
I love the silence & speed of slick tyres.
Edit: I don't think any of the cool lot have noticed the reflectors.

Well done, and welcome to the club.
There does seem to be a big influx of new riders at the moment. Is this due to the weather or the cost of motoring or something else?
Thank you, I enjoy cycling & I don't want to end up a fat old **** like many people I know. There does seem to be a big influx of new riders at the moment. Is this due to the weather or the cost of motoring or something else?
I Have had my current MTB for about 10years and have ALWAYS had cycles ever since I was a nipper, so not really new to cycling.
I'm Just new to Road Riding on a roadbike (as opposed to doing it on my MTB).

Thanks for the welcome.

Its good seeing people on the commute, I feel like shouting "OI WHERE WERE YOU IN JANUARY!!!"

To be fair, there is so much else to mention the reflectors are way down the list.
Bike lent over
Non drive side
Wrong chain line
Valves not at 12 or 6 o'clock
Oh and it's not in the kitchen

Other than that, enjoy it. I'm being brave and holding out until the 2014 bikes are launched to get that bargain 2013 bike

It is the most enjoyable way of keeping fit (IMHO), when I bought my first roadie I was 13st 4lbs - I now float between 10st 8lbs and 11st 2lbs with a body fat of less than 15%.Won't be long and you will be addicted to the saddle, I get the right hump if I can't get out for at least 5 rides in a week.....

My commute in to work is mostly downhill but you know what that means is coming this afternoon!I just Went out for my usual pre-work ride, did the route in half the time and half the effort (compared to doing it on my MTB).

I also still have the reflectors on, I'll get more chance to mess about at the weekend hopefully.
I'm not on slick tyres, I have a Genesis Vapour with slightly knobbly cross tyres but I'm considering getting another set of wheels to stick some slicks on.
I like to think I'm not bandwagon jumping, I have been commuting for years by bike off and on but now that I have to do it all of the time (it's quicker to walk than drive!) I thought I'd get myself a little present.

had bikes previously but only as a kid. new to "adult" biking if you will. There does seem to be a big influx of new riders at the moment. Is this due to the weather or the cost of motoring or something else?
got a new hybrid from halfrauds last week and ive done 50 miles since. really fun way of keeping fit, and very addictive.

I am a bit surprised we have got this far without someone mentioning 'the rules'.....everything you need to know is here;
The Rules
I saw that and had a chuckle at first, then it seemed to go on and on like the rules of an antiquated golf club. I'm sure that most of it is meant in jest, but I can also imagine that there are those out there who treat it with a bit too much reverence. The Rules
Don't worry about hills, just pretend you're on the Col de Madeline (alternatively, get angry about somebodys driving, you'll be amazed at how quickly the anger gets you to the top).
My first thoughts about road bikes were that thepot holes that barely registered when on my mtb were now more like mine shafts. Certainly shows how bad some of our roads are. Welcome to the darkside......
