Hi,

I put down £399 as a deposit to hold a property till it becomes vacant at the end of August less than 7 days ago. Now the issue is that they are charging me more in terms of securing the property, an extra £60 along with contacting my employers without asking for my permission.

My concern now is - Is it possible for me to back out of the property deal and obtain the £399 i put down cleanly or not? I paid by debit card not cash.

Does sale of goods act apply?

The cooling off period?

There must be a clause somewhere due to the timeframe i would have thought? Or is it bye bye £399 in the worst case? I know this is a bit vauge in description but i am willing to PM the right person relating to this.

Kudos

what does the contract say that you signed? Must be termination clauses in here and outline of what fees are to be paid

I suspect the £60 is for taking up references and doing a credit check, with the £399 going towards the actual TDS type deposit. As above, what does the contract actually state?

I've sorted it, the £399 they took was part of the agreement then they tried to charge extra but now have backed down and agreed not to charge me.

It was for a credit check on my partner which wasn't required because my salary is sufficient!

Estate agents are rip offs. Ah well!
