Resigning, Giving more than the minimum notice

Hello,

I am in a situation where I have to give 4 weeks notice to my current employer. However my manager is off the week that would be the 4 week notice period. So can I give them 5 weeks notice? I don't want them to turn around and say ok but you're leaving in 4 weeks, as that is a weeks worth of money I'd lose which I don't want to happen.

Also there is a moderate chance I may get gardening leave as soon as I hand in my notice. Are they even more likely to do the 4 week thing there or do they have to respect the date I give in my notice letter?

Give it on the last day that you can; it is irrelevant if your manager is off. Keep it simple.

Or HR?
Presumably the exact requirements are written somewhere in your employment contract.

Yes, but my manager isn't there. But you're all right, I'll just give it to someone else, and phone him up and say something along the lines of 'kthxbye'
