Finding routes in your area?
Discussion
Does anyone know of a decent online resource for finding good road routes nearby?
Something like Strava's 'explore' but rather than showing segments, allowing you to say, for example, '20 miles, medium climbs' and it finds stuff nearby?
Running low on imagination and feel like exploring without compromising my workout...

There used to be a useful tool here:
http://www.jonathanokeeffe.com/strava/multi-ride-m...
which allowed you to see all the rides which passed through a particular Strava segment - really useful to see what routes others are doing. Unfortunately Strava changed the way they share their data recently and it doesn't work currently - may change in the future.
How about finding some of the local clubs on Strava and seeing what rides they are doing (could always join if it looks good!)

Bring up a segment on Strava that you'd like to include in a ride and click on one of the dates on the leader board. That will bring up the person's full ride and all you need to do is zoom out the map to see where they rode.
Some may be too long/hilly/flat/not local enough but with a bit of poking around you should find something suitable.
Also you can go to http://connect.garmin.com/ then Explore and Activities (you have to sign up for this) and use the search to find rides with whatever start point/duration/distance you like. This is the better one of the two actually, but you could always just buy one of those 'map' things

That. But also - leave home and for the first hour simply turn left and right randomly. Then complete the loop.
Here's another angle - should find ones that other folks are riding (and hopefully therefore are more pleasant)..

Yes this one. Lets you search for distance and route types in an area. Also has some new wizardry thing to find routes for you. I like using it for mapping race and sportive routes (if they don't provide you with one) so you can see the elevation graph and also use the 3D flyover to check the course out.I tend not to bother now and just go and ride, when I feel half done I turn round and go back, or navigate a loop.
In addition to the ones posted above I also use http://www.bikemap.net/en/ and http://www.cycle-route.com/ and recently I have been using http://raceshape.com/heatmap/ which shows hotspot roads used in Strava so can help you find some good ones

http://www.mapmyride.com/maps/auto_route/Its for MVP only. I am not and haven't used it. Just noticed an advert for it the other day.
Hmm, for anyone considering, I just downloaded Bike Hub on my phone.
Seems it relies on preset routes rather than actually planning one out for you. I've told it my post code, said I want to go on a 25 mile ride (an A to A route) and all it can suggest is that I cycle 15 miles to then join a preset 40 mile A to A route, to then cycle back 15 miles to my house. So all in all, a 25 mile route is asked for and it can only suggest a 70 mile route.
Similar when asking for a 90 minute ride.. It suggested me a 4 hour route based on me cycling an hour to join another preset route.
Waste of time.
I tend to just use maps.google.co.uk to plan routes.. use the directions tool to plan out routes based on where I want to end up.
