Right, I bit the bullet and bought a 2013 Specelaized Allez in black for my daily 40km round trip commute to the office each day, 50% of the route is quite country lanes with medium climb/ decents and the rest of the jounry is into the town/city of Chelmsford.
I'm still finding my feet and learning which postion suit which gradient of road better but I'm getting there an already I seem to be knocking minutes off my commute.

Having spent year MTBing I thought I'd never see myself on a road bike, oh how times have changed

If anyone is interested here is my commute: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=cm77+6rx&...

OT for a moment but do I detect a correlation between cycling commuters and Alfa ownership? Deanogtv, uncinqsix, me....
I am absolutely NOT going to draw any conclusions wink

I'll bet the one way system infront of KEGS is fun!

I've just started the past few weeks, great fun smile

And re alfa ownership correlating with cycle commuting, 22 year old mazdas combined with trying to learn how to spanner yourself can have similar results biggrin

I'm aiming to be able to cycle to work before the end of summer, currently looking at buying my first proper road bike, I've always had MTBs (and BMX's before them as a kid).

OP My commute is a similar distance but has some killer hills.

Edit: funny enough I'm looking at a used Specialized Allez.

Thanks for the kind words guys

In a tempt of fate I very nearly didnt have a bike. Office security put a call out to check the bike sheds as they had chased somebody off. Low and behold my bike is sitting there, expensive D-Lock gone, cheap combo lock I have in the shed had been cut and was just hanging there, why they didnt take it is beyond me. Guess it was my luck day!!

I'm hoping to start imminently...just waiting on a saddle bag, tyre levers, spare tubes and multitool arriving from Wiggle.

Can't find my old ones hence the delay - guaranteed if I set off without spares, i'll get a puncture!!

Done it a few times before, but this is the first time i'm trying to do it regularly.

Roughly 8 miles each way with a couple of hills.

police recon the thief would have 'froze' the d-link and smashed it??? really??
I mentioned that there are know gangs who watch the commuters come in a tagets half decent bikes when they know people are away working in the offices. I work next to the staion and the bike shed is on view of passing thieves

I expect they poured liquid nitrogen over it - it's actually fairly cheap stuff. Certainly the idea of breaking a steel lock by cooling it below its ductile-brittle transition point and then hitting it is sound and probably a fair amount quieter than, say, a saw.

Glad they caught the scrote smile

What was your D-lock?

And anyway you could persuade your boss to let you keep the bike next to your desk wink
