Just had cause to cancel my insurance only to be told that there is no refund payable - despite the policy being in place less than two months and me covering less than 20% of the annual mileage limit in that time. Anyone had any similar problems or suggestions as what to do?

None - I've checked the policy documenation several times - nor did the broker highlight this point at the time of taking out the cover. - Suppose I should have paid by monthly DD!!

That can't be right, I'd get straight on to the Citizens Advice Bureau. You've paid up front for a service you can no longer make use of, I can appreciate that there may be a cancellation charge but nothing more than that surely. Dare we ask which insurance company ? NAME & SHAME !! I'd also say you have a case for claiming negligence against the broker, you may want to have a rant on the phone to that effect. Best of luck, Ross. Funny - that thought had occured to me too! - Don't worry I shall name and shame if they fail to come up with something.

I'd ring the ABI (Assoc of British Insurers) and see what they think

thats definitely unethical and, if there is no clause, illegal. You are not having the service, therefore you dont pay. It really is that simple

If you had term insurance then there is usually no refund as you took a one off payment for a one off period of time. This is similar to Mortgage indemnity insurance. Most car insurance is not term insurance though, but find out.

How can you tell without asking the insurer? Would monthly payments have been offered with term insurance?
