Hello all - I have decided to swap four wheels for two and have just signed up for the London to Brighton bike ride in support of charity Bike 4 Cancer - http://www.bike4cancer.org/london-to-brighton-bike...

Has anyone done the London to Brighton bike ride before? Specifically, how on earth do we get back from Brighton afterwards? I've heard that the train companies do not allow bikes on the trains on the day of the ride.

It looks like we might have to hire a van for the day to get everyone back from Brighton which means one of us can't ride! Where's the cheapest place to hire a van for the day?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Thanks for the reply - I'll look into the return carriage option. I wonder how they protect the bikes from banging against each other. The latest is that we'll stay in a hotel on Sunday night and ride back on Monday via Arundel. Maybe see you on the day!

It looks like they do organise carriage back to London - it costs £25. Your bikes are carried in a van whilst you go back on a coach. The train companies have yet to respond! SO... it looks like we're staying overnight and then cycling back the next day. That way we can have a few beers after the ride and enjoy a blast home the following day.

Last Friday my daughter and I together with one of her colleagues did the Moonride from London to Brighton.
My daughter lives in Brighton so I drove there on Friday afternoon and left my car in Brighton. We took the train from Brighton together with bikes up to London St Prancras.
The ride was very well organised with return transport for riders and bikes organised from the finish. The transport had to be pre-booked but looked well organised.
The big lesson we learnt was to check the route from the station,in our case Stratford International to the start point, before you travel.

I did the BHF night ride on Saturday/Sunday, my gf's sister lives in Hove so she visited her for the weekend and I got a lift back.

I've used the organised transport in previous years and at other events, typically your bike gets loaded into the back of a TNT lorry and you hop on a coach. There's usually a big roll of bubble wrap and tape provided. I've not had any issues with bike damage and it's usually cheaper and less hassle than getting a train or paying for petrol there and back, although maybe not if there's a large group of you.

Very many thanks for all your help here. There seems to be very little information about bikes on South West Trains' website so on merit, I think we will stay over and ride back the next day. Does anybody fancy joining us for the organised ride on Sunday?
