Ok, it seems like I am joining the world of you non engine powered bikes, which is a new one for me.

so where do you get cheap bike parts for online? are there any go to places you can give me?

specifically I will be wanting to buy a replacement shimano sora 16gear RH shifter, and some new pedals, oh and a helmet

Welcome.

There are A LOT of online bike parts shops these days. Wiggle, Chain Reaction, Tredz, Halfords, Tweeks... and many more. Best is just to Google for the specific part you're after (it'll be Sora 8-speed) and see who has one, e.g. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod...

Another couple of cheap options are Rose bikes and bike-discount.de, both of which are in Germany but are usually very cheap for Shimano components and postal times seem comparable to some of the UK suggestions above.

You may struggle to get just one side of gear/brake components as they're usually sold in pairs, but good luck.

I really rate Ribble cycles for online stuff.

Also, dit isn't a great idea to buy a helmet online, you really need to try them on.

cheers for the advice.
will go into a shop to get a helmet fitted then.

Also are the shimano sora gear levers any good. would it be worthwhile just getting the same for the bike if I need to replace both, or go for something similar but either better or cheaper?

And so it begins... wink

They're 'fine'. I certainly wouldn't downgrade from there, but only you can say whether you'd prefer your old bike with a couple of hundred quid spent on it, or a new bike for however much you choose to spend...
