hi I'm a fat git..........
Discussion
and have 3 packets of fags left, no more drinking and smoking after that... I don't like the idea of the little ones knowing that daddy smokes.
currently just shy of 17 stone and 6 ft .. ideally I'd like to get down to 15 stone.
thinking of getting a cyclocross effort (seen a scott one at £1055 to go on and off roads with) am I barking up the right tree to start getting fit again?
cheers noel

That's a lot if money to spend on just something to get fit on...
I would look to spent 2-300 tops on something semi decent and see how you get on.
I would also probably go for something like a hybrid or mountain bike on road tyres simply for comfort. Last thing you want us a specialist bike for just one type if riding if you're looking to get into cycling. You might find you love road riding but have a bike that's useless at it etc.

ahh not a bad idea ...just assumed that thin tyres wouldn't go on a mountain bike.
the gears are shagged too was just thinking I'd make a new start and it would force me to do it having spent a lot on a new toy.
Have also seen hybrid ? mountain bikes with thinner tyres !
thought the cyclocross bikes would be a better bet seen as it would be mostly road use.
ps: are the brakes any good on these as they seem all to have old style brakes !
cheers again noel

In April I was, well I don't know as the bathroom scales only went up to 19 stones. This morning I weighed in at 17 stones.
I bought a totally unsuitable hybrid bike and knackered it.
I only cycled 60/70 miles a week and maybe pushed it 10 of those miles up hills.
I now cycle up the hills I used to push up and love it.
If you can afford the money go for it, if not spend less and still go for it.

A year ago I was in the same boat.. 6ft 2 and way over 17 stone.. Had done no exercise for 15 years. Smoked a lot too (stil do to be fair!) I decided that I needed to get it sorted so got out my 1995 specialised rockhopper (with narrower wheels and road biased tyres) made sure it was safe and serviced and started riding.. At the beginning. Thought I was doing well when I managed 3 miles but that soon rose to around 6-10 miles per day and sometimes 15 at the weekends when time allowed and after 4 - 5 months I had lost nearly 3 stone.. Result! I managed to keep the weight loss going through winter and finally rewarded myself with a brand new bianchi road bike about a month ago.. Now i do 10 miles before work on monday- wedsnesday and friday and go for much longer rides at weekends.. Managed my first 50 mile ride yesterday!
Will continue to use the rockhopper for winter training and wet days for the foreseeable future..
Do it! It will change your life..

And this is what it's all about. KOM's, carbon doodads, col de crise d'age moyenne - they're there if you want them. But fundamentally it's about getting out there, being healthy, seeing the countryside and having fun. Will continue to use the rockhopper for winter training and wet days for the foreseeable future..

I'm in a similar boat at the moment. 21 years old and over 20 stone (I'm over 2 metres tall though and gave up smoking a few months back) I haven't really excercised much since January and have just dusted off my MTB and Singlespeed road bike and am hoping to lose a few stone.
Road bike is soon to be replaced by a B'Twin Triban 7 which I could not best for the money in a frame size suitable for me and I will be cycling to and from work on it for the foreseeable future. Commuting by bike was the logical option for me as the bike will pay for itself in saved fuel bills. They stock them at Decathlon along with the Triban 3 and 5, the 3 being well reviewed as a budget bike (£300 with a carbon fork and Sora/2300 groupset).
Be good to hear how you get on as I always seem to lack motivation with these kind of things.

Great stuff, keep up the good work.
I'm in the same boat, but a fair bit heavier and 6ft 7, I've got myself a Giant mtb and have been going out every other night for two weeks, I only managed less than a mile on my first ride, but am up to 6 now and looking to hit 10 by the end of next week. I feel much better already, I just hope to keep up my enthusiasm once things turn cold and wet.

another story here.. I'm 47 next month, never been fit ever.
I was a smoker, gave that up and became an overweight drinker, 108Kg's. Stopped all the bad stuff, got a road bike and slowly got on it, a few kilometres here and there. had to stop a few times to catch my breath, Then building up more and more, Strava helped focus my mind.
Yesterday I cycled 100k, climbed 1250m and didn't look back, lost over 15kgs in the last 3-4 months, still another 5 to go.
Get on it, you won;t regret it, only regret not doing it sooner.
