Grrr! On Central they are/were running a poll asking viewers how much they would be happy to pay to use the new M6 relief road when it opens.

Options were something like
a/ £1
b/ £1-2
c/ £2-5

So where was the "bugger all I've already paid my road tax" option????

Apparently it will cut time down from 61 minutes to 22 minutes. Apart from wondering if toll collection is factored into that, how the hell do they know? If ALL the current M6 traffic diverted to the new road it would be just as slow, surely?

Now if by levying a toll that means its a private road, and therefore not subject to NSL, then maybe it would be worth a few bob!

Let em charge for it - it'll only be the lorries and sales reps that'll fork out for it, leaving the run thru Brum simpler for the rest of us.

They will NEVER make it non-NSL, cos that goes totally against their anti-car philosophy, and you can guarantee that it'll be at the top end of the scale - think about it, Dartford Bridge (about 2 miles) is £1, so this loop at, what, about 30 miles(?) is gonna be at least a £5.

ferkin daylight robbery.

A big bridge like Dartford could easily cost more to build than 30 miles of motorway.

Hmm let's think about this. IIRC the Dartford bridge cost about £1 billion.

Motorways cost something like £500k per lane per km, again IIRC, and making the big assumption of no significant structures. So ... 30mi = 50ish km x 6 lanes = 300 lane-kms x £500,000 = £150 million.

So if I've got this even close to right (not guaranteed!), and given the Dartford toll is £1 then this extra M6 should cost, err, 150/1000 x £1 = 15p.

In fact the road will cost less to maintain than the bridge as well. 12p toll, how about it?

They might make it non-NSL: would 50mph do?
