Leaking Diff Pinion Seal
Discussion
As topic states, I appear to have a leaking diff pinion seal.............again! I had it replaced approx 2 years and 8,000 miles ago at a respected TVR specialist. Is it acceptable normal wear and tear for it to be leaking again or is it just bad luck? Any advice would be appreciated. I can live with it for now (it's only a little leak) when it's in my garage but others not so keen on oil leaks on their drives!
Interesting comment. Now I think about it, the diff seal didn't leak before the last service (full 12K job) in March and it was an MOT at the same time (done after service items completed which included changing diff oil) and I got an advisory that diff was leaking slightly so you might be right. What should I do to check the situation?
Most diffs and gearboxes that I know about (you need to check), have a filler hole plug. USUALLY you fill it until it starts to drip out of the same hole assuming the car is on the level then put the plug back in. Could be different on TVR but unlikely. Never had to play with mine i'm afraid.
I had the same on my TVR 3000M diff fitted with a TR6 diff, it found its own level and was fine thereafter.

Anyone know if it's a straighforward job to do the pinion oil seal?
Drop the propshaft, prize out old one and drift in new one?
Not that simple unfortunately.Drop the propshaft, prize out old one and drift in new one?
You need to remove the drive flange , then replace the seal, refitting the flange and big nut whilst keeping the pinion gear in correct alignment to the diff gear.
Best course is to mark the nut against the pinion shaft, count the turns to remove the nut, pull off the pinion flange, lever out the seal, refit the flange, and tighten the nut the same number of turns and until the marks line up.
Edited as my previous reply was too convoluted.
