Currently I'm driving a manual 04 4200gt Masser (which I happen to think is a great courtesy car ).

Normally I drive an automatic 3200GT.

Why the massive difference in engine sound?

The 4200 sounds much "gruntier" for want of a better word.

Just guessing here, but I would assume it is due to the fact that there is no turbos in the way of the exhaust gases.

Hence why a normal 996 sounds much fruitier than a 996 Turbo.

4200 = 4200cc
3200 = 3200cc (plus turbos smothering induction noise)..

More cc + less turbo = more rorty noises.

Which garage gave you the 4200 as a courtesy car then?

bigger displacement generally means deeper sound.

Plus the other facts above

Thanks Mr T

Dick Lovett of Swindon. 04 model with about 6k on it.

I'm finding it a bit tough hitting the right gears as the box is very tight. There's a big clunk (yes, I know all the technical terms) from 1st to 2nd.

Given time, I think I'd prefer the manual over auto, though.

Err, isn't the 3200 a 6 pot and the 4200 a V8 ?

Infact, isn't the 3200 a straight six? (silky smooth by nature)

Both V8's. Is'nt the 3200 one of the smallest capacity V8's around?

3200's best sound is at idle/low revs from outside - I used to spend ages getting mine parked just right in the garage!

Nah, the blip the throttle, turbo whistle and bark is the best! Does sound like a jet engine at low revs acceleration though!

hmm that is my criticism - sounds just like a naff jet when pulling away at full throttle (outside) - I am told Tubi corrects this huge flaw but am a bit sceptical - I dont see how much detail gets past 2 turbos and Cats....

Unfortunately the 4200 manual has now gone back to Swindon.

Never really mastered the gears and the 3200 auto is smoother.

There's a bit more headroom in the 4200, though. My head touches the roof on the 3200 but there was a good inch clearance on the 4200.

When cold, it tended to jump out of second unless really rammed in. The driver from the garage said he had the same problem.

No that would be the 2 litre V8 in my 208.

Imagine what a 4200 would sound like with carbs!

I stand corrected - insert 'modern' in comment.

Carbs - pretty loud as you'd be in the engine most of the time adjusting them!

Anorak alert! Plenty of small-capacity V8s have been around... but yes, smallest production V8 in the last decade or so. The new radical SR8 will have a 2.6 V8, and so will an upcoming Caterham IIRC. Suzuki had a concept car witha 1600cc V8 7 or so years back.

Just in case anyone cares, but I'm guessing not really :-)
