When we went to Goa a few years back we had the perscrition stuff, and had no problems, but you could buy better out there over the counter, and a lot of other stuff too

Get some proper advice. It isn't something to take lightly. My wife caught it despite the tablets, and could have died.

Start with the following link and then follow the "travellers" thread into malarial drugs.

www.masta.org.uk

Finally, avoid larium if you can.

There's a company in Leeds called MASTA (Medical Advisory Service for Travellers Abroad) who give advice on what's needed for where. Might be worth giving them a call.

Yum beat me to it!

DON'T buy the drugs when you get there, as you need to start the tablets before you go....

Besides, you never know what the quality of the tablets will be like.

Chloriqine and Paludrine.
Depends where you're going though - different tablets are effective in different places. Try to go where you going in the dry season - and avoid lakes, showers anywhere wet really. Seek doctors advice - they'll tell you which tablets for which country. Theres loads of stuff on the web about it too.

If your unlucky they'll recommend Larium which will make your hair fall out and get really paranoid ,trips, schizpophrenia etc.

Still better than getting Malaria eh ?

I know it's Scottish but they have a slightly more helpful web-site than the Dept of Health.

www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk

The simple answer is there's no such thing as a good Maleria tablet. It depends very much on when and where you are going.

Agree with YUM avoid Larium at all costs
It has some dreadful side effects that can mess with your mind.
