S2 Rear drum, 2 disc brake conversion.....

As title say ,i must get on with this conversion, as a few of you guys have done this sensible mod...
I found the stopping performence, not to inspiring from cold..
Read TopGear Tvr thread last june and few others, littered about forum..

So my main question, is this massive step forward, or hardly worth the bother....
So does anyone have rear disc for sale, Sierra,Chim brakes etc..or start hunting on the bay ...

I doubt rear discs will improve things much at "cold", the big advantage of disc over drum is they are better able to dissipate heat, reducing fade after prolonged use.

I believe the standard brakes, in good order, are certainly up to the job for road use, but did convert mine to rear disc's for the challenge, the parts "came up" at the right price, and they look good!

If its a performance upgrade you want I would say first job is to upgrade the fronts, an easy job with sierra parts my brake balance is unaffected, I have the parts for rear disks but can't comment as I'm a while of fitting them.

I considered the very same thing a couple of years ago after my first EuroTour.

I courted opinion and ended up upgrading the front brakes to these:





I think they're off an RS Turbo, I bought them from Hans.

They're more than enough and I've since learned a bit more about braking principles although I don't know the exact ratio for the S but very little braking is actually achieved via the rears. Mind you, rear discs look much better than drums but actually stopping was more important to me than looking good in the field I'd just landed in ;-)

Just my view but I would recommend concentrating on the fronts and leave the rears.

The early Chimaera rear brake setup with 252 solid discs,callipers and bearing carriers bolt straight on to the rear end of the S.

There will be a few forsale soon for very little money .

Some of the Chimaera owners are fitting the later 272 vented discs ,escort cosworth rear callipers and different bearing carriers ..so will be surplus to requirement.

It will be a bolt on application.

Sold mine a while back to a very happy S owner .

Sorry to hijack this slightly, but would the front discs be a straight swop from the XR4, or would caliper upgrade be a sensible option?
Not that I have trouble stopping as such but vented discs avoiding brake fade for mountain roads sounds good.

Mike all fronts are vented it's just a matter of diameter, standard (240mm) big or bigger !!!



And I think each step up needs the appropriate caliper (and spacers, longer fatter bolts in some cases}

Hi guys , let you know what I'm running , I've done anout 2000 miles since they were bought from racetech ..so on the fronts 252mm vented drilled disc, with upgraded pads..and with new rear drums, and cylinders, so still quite good..
So upgrading from current set up..

You have 252mm disks on the original calipers ? That's a new one on me . The rear disk brake conversion is typicaly a 253mm solid(unvented) disk the original fronts are 240mm vented with the xr4 upgrade taking you up to 260mm vented

Mikel sorry have not thought about budget I will spend ..This subject can be a minefield to battle thru ..
I initially thought just upgrade the rear drums to Chim disc .....
But feedback so far on here seems to recommend to concentrate on the front , as the cars are quite balanced..
One thing I don't won't to do is buy parts, here and there to mate up ..
