Who knows a lot about these motors?

Here's one quite local to me ...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111095459435?ssPageName=...

Not sure about the interior - is that the original one - not sure which ones had the netting etc - prob not the 1.6!

And the black surrounds on the healights - something looks wrong there - are they original?

Any thoughts appreciated ...

Thoughts on the price? All on condition I know ... but it *looks* clean enough.

Black grille and headlamp surrounds are correct for the age.
Seats are from a 'Ghia' I think.
Wheels from 2.8 injection special.

He refers to it as a 'laser'. Don't think that's right; looks like a standard 1600 with upgraded seats and wheels.

Hi,
The capri in your link is not a 1.6 Laser as described (as these didn't come out until 1984) but a 1.6L.

The car looks pretty standard. Dont worry, the black plastic headlight surrounds are correct but the chocolate interior isn't & looks instead like it came from a Capri Ghia (a more luxurious model).

Other than that, from the pics it looks clean.
Although the front panel (under the front bumper) looks a little bubbly as though rust might of been covered up?!

Good luck!

Interior is from a Capri Ghia.

Black headlight surrounds and grill are original although many many owners colour coded them.

Passenger door doesn't look right neither, colour change? Wheels are 13" Injection copies.

And it certainly isn't a 1.6 Laser as they weren't available then. This is a poverty spec 1.6L.

Hugely overpriced.

I think hugely overpriced is unfair.

I see it at around 1800 to be fair 2000 on a good day.

I would probably worry about the inner sills with the outers looking like they have been done.

I suspect it is not as good in the flesh.

Thanks for the tips guys - a lot to learn about these motors.

Might go and view tomorrow or Sat - depends on the weather really - I'm not desperate for one just yet.

Did the Laer have a better spec then or was it just a later model name?

Wiki to the rescue ...

Capri Laser

From November 1984 onwards, the Capri was sold only in Britain, with only right hand drive cars being made from this date. The normally aspirated 1.6 and 2.0 variants were rebranded with a new trim level – "Laser" – which featured a fully populated instrument pod, leather gear lever, leather steering wheel, four-spoke alloy wheels as used on the S models, an electric aerial and colour-coded grille and mirrors.

if your looking at Capris , Jeremy Walton has a fantastic book Capri

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Capri-Jeremy-Walton...

Also join Capripower forum , they often have decent members cars for sale.

if your looking at mk3's 1600s are under powered , a 2000s will be better balanced , or better still a 3000s ( although these are getting priceyk( thinh of the professionals ) , 3000 ghia a tad cheaper

why not go for a 2.8i , pound for pound excellent performance 2.8i specials had half leather interior 5 speed box and limited slip dif. the ultimate specials were the last Capris 280's with special black leather interior , brooklands green paint ...slightly larger wheels.

I think that looks rather nice, especially being a boggo L which is very, very rare these days.

Cant stand the Ghia interior, looks very out of place in the car but would look lovely back in a Ghia, you might get an appropriate used L interior via the Capri Club.

However for that price you may as well get a reasonable 2.8 instead or a nice 2.0s, I had a 2.0 laser and now have a 2.8i,the 2.0 wins on raggability but the 2.8 sounds awesome and if you drive a 2.0 you soon tyre of the "Is that a 2.8 mate?" every time you stop!

If its just the extra spec you're after with a laser I wouldnt worry, the leccy bits will of stopped working anyway and the leather gear knob and wheel will of been swapped or decomposed by now!

To me at least 1600L is a lot more interesting than a 1600 Laser.

Over priced for a 1.6 & flatters to deceive with fancy wheels , body work could be better, the black muck just forward of the rear arches smells of a hasty repair. This car needs a good check over, rear spring hangers, chassis rails & A posts are serious rot areas. Capri`s just love to hide rust. Do not bid without seeing it first !!!

Also if the car seems to be all good insist on a test drive,i worked on these cars when they were new at a ford main agent and the 1.6 variety felt very underpowered even in the 80s and the roadholding was nothing to shout about in the dry and very poor in wet conditions, the best bit about the cars was the driving position and the gearchange quality on the 4 speeders.Im not knocking them as a car, they certainly have a style and prescence about them and values can only go up,just make sure you view and drive it first.

A modern set of tyres will transform the grip and handling of these cars, also a decent carb and exhaust will make the free reviing 1.6 a perfect hoot to drive with a top speed of 100.

The car your looking at is a mismatch of cars and specs. It looks likes at best an "L" spec and has an after market sunroof, appears to be cardinal red, has wrong interior seats and wheels.

Depending on what you want, you need to do your research wisely, there's loads of these Capris out there and some of them are good.

I sold new Fords of this era at TRIMOCO and Godfrey Davis

I found the secret to decent handling was to have a decent set of rear tyres

Thanks again guys. I think I'll pass on this one. Pity as it is only 20 mins from me.

I probably need to really think about what Capri i'm after and settle on that one, disregarding other size engines, specs etc. the 2.8s are nice, but I quite like the early mk IIIs ... 2.0/3.0s etc

A good 3.0 would be nice, more torque than a 2.8, just watch for overheating & timing gear wear. Good luck ,you will not be disappointed if you get the right car. Best all rounder would be a 2.0s, lots of tuning potential , can be as much fun as a RS2000 & won`t hit your wallet too much smile

That one on ebay went today for the asking price - or so the offer said ... so someone must have liked it ...

Auction ended early obviously. Signed up to the Capri Power forum - lots of nice cars on there and lots of background info on Capris generally - what to look for, pluses and minuses of each engine size etc.

Gonna be a Mk2 or 3 I think ... 2.0/3.0/2.8 - we'll have to see what comes up when the funds are available. Something suitable for use everyday, so no show queens and well maintained will be the target.
