I'm sure the question must have been answered before but can't find the thread - which are the recommended insurance companies for Ferrari owners? Norwich Union Direct said no way on the basis of car value and performance! Mind you they said that about my M5 and I went thru BMW Insurance Services only to find they were underwritten by guess who.....yep Norwich Union!!

Some companies advertising in Ferrari News:
AON 01483 70 60 70 (underwritten by you know who!)
FCI 020 8532 9637
Heritage 0121 246 6060
Footman James 0121 561 4196
Nowell & Richards 01785 255514
First Point 01604 499 799
Classic Line 01455 619022

I've put a few there so that you can ring around and get some quotes. Would recommend you do just that. For example, when I was insuring the 456 and the Caterham over a year ago, it was Footman James that were most competitive, for both, by a country mile; last year, insuring the 456 & 360, they were the most expensive, bar Norwich Union on the open market (which is I expect the quote you got). Both cars are insured with Classic Line at the moment and I have found them very good and willing to take the time to explain things to you- such as european cover, track days etc.

I used AON for my 328 and the 308 before it. They were the cheapest I could find and they paid a windscreen claim on the 308 without any trouble. I think the 328 (if I still had it) would have cost £400-odd for 3k miles as a second car this year.

Actually, I use 'em for my daily driver too, good grief this sounds like a commercial !

i have been pleasantly surprised this year by a substantially lower rate than last year ! i use cheam insurance brokers at 0208 649 7617 (speak to mark abbott- tell him ross sent u). last year they insured the 512tr for around £1600, this year they found a deal at £1120 !
i am sure somebody will tell me where i could have gotten it cheaper but so far i am happy.

Anyone know which insurance company 'go easy' on left hand 355s..??
I suspect there will be some companies that won't want to know.

just spent ages trying to sort this myself on a left hook 355 spider....now for the bad news, apparently they are the highest risk, the spider bit gets a loading, the lhd bit gets a loading....and if you are under 30 like me, might as well give up now.

if you are over 30, with garage and full ncb you may be able to get the car insured for £1200 with tracker and cat 1 fitted!

if under 30 as myself then some insurers will be quoting £4k+. After about 30 unsuccessful calls privelidge were able to offer cover for £1500, but again tracker & cat 1 and big excess.

I got my insurance for £3600 and the LHD would have cost me about £300 more. This percentage increase was similar everywhere I got quoted so I guess 10% increase for LHD. Try www.swinton.co.uk and www.endsleigh.co.uk. You can get an online quote. These cars need a tracker and also, if you are in London the quotes seem to be a lot higher than slightly outside. I nearly bought a house in Elstree and the quote for that postcode was a saving of over 15% from one company, but only something like 3% from another company!! Shop around as there are hugh differences in quotes, but don't get crap cover from crap brokers as they can be hassle if anything goes wrong. Some insurance companies only like bread and butter stuff so won't like any LHD or car over £35,000.

This might be a daft question, but why bother
with a Ferrari in a 70 mph country ?

Unless you go to Germany a lot, or use it for track
days, the nineteen year old in the white van will always
be faster than you on the road.

Unless you are particularly keen on paying five
or ten times more than the rest of use to travel
by car.

My insurance would be pretty dear on any decent car, purely due to age (just turned 24). When we were 19 I had friends paying £1500 - 1800 for pretty much standard cars and my Supra Twin Turbo cost me something £150 more than they were paying so I was very happy. The Mazda I use everyday costs me £950 p.a., which for such a shit car isnt cheap. Its worth £2500 at most, so I pay nearly 50% of its value in insurance, the 355 is more like 4-5% of the value.

And as Manu pointed out, who says its a 70MPH country? Its not always about the speed anyway.

Doh. The government.

What else ?

Once you've got a car that can cruise easily all day every day
10 or 20 mph over the legal limit, then anything more,
in my opinion, is money down the drain.

Unless you want to spend 100,000 pounds
for the dozen or so times a year you need the level of performance that a Ferrari provides.

Don't want to go into it too much, but I am pretty sure I "use" its performance more than a dozen or so times a year. And its the sounds of the car that attracts me, not the speed.

Further, what you are saying is such that marrying and shagging an ugly girl that will do the job (i.e. a hole is a goal) is okay. If thats okay for you, then fine, leaves more of the better stuff for everyone else. I personally couldn't bother with an ugly girl, maybe you can?

Obviously, I'm totally with Ninja's viewpoint.

There are plenty of opportunities to thrash your Ferrari in the UK (on the road) AND the continent, which is just a short channel-tunnel hop away.
Moreover if you pick the correct time and place and are sensible about it, the inability to thrash your supercar 100% of the time just makes the pleasure of booting the throttle (when you get the chance) even sweeter.

Moreover you can enjoy these cars (and hence their very high speeds) WITHOUT endangering yourself or ANYBODY else IF YOU ARE SUFFICIENTLY INTELLIGENT AND SENSIBLE.

How do I know? I've done it myself and I've seen others do it - and it hasn't been mad, wild, silly or unsafe.... bottom line.

(LEGAL DISCLAIMER: I've never exceeded the legal speed limit. )

dcb, so why do you drive a XJ8 3.2 ? A Nissan Micra will easily cruise at 70 or 80, or if you want something a bit more safe, how about a 1.4 Astra ? Bet that would save you a lot of money ... cut your fuel bill by 1/3 for starters .....

Your argument is flawed (IMO) ....

Why buy a 200 quid gold watch, when a 99p digital off the local market will tell you the time ?

Why live in a 5 bed house in the country, when a 3 bed terrace in a sh*ty area of the city will do just as good a job of keeping dry and warm ?

Why buy a 34" widescreen, when you can still watch Eastenders on a 14" B&W ?

I'm guessing from your comments you've never driven a Ferrari ?

When I'm in the mood, I can get just as much pleasure from my 308GTS by pootling round at the speed limits ..... the booming sound of the engine behind you, the way she sits round the corners, the way she responds, the way she handles on the tighter twisties, the admiring looks you get .... and all within the speed limit. And if I'm not in the mood, and the road conditions allow, then I can get pleasure from doing, um, a couple of mph over the limit

Sometimes you can get pleasure off an item just from owning it.

Just my 2p worth, just my opinion

Getting back to the topic of this thread and addressing dcb's concerns over cost of ownership, one of the reasons I bought a ferrari is 'cos it's half the price to insure compared to a honda s2000...

Nah, he's jealous because he's got a Prescott special. Maybe it's a company car and he had to choose a luxo barge at his 'level' in whatever company?

Just 'popped' down the road in the Chimaera, sun's out, roof down, burbling along with the traffic - much more fun than sitting in my other car with a roof/air con. I didn't overtake any other cars or exercise the power of the car (OK, once then OK!!).

For Sale Jag XJ8, might p/ex for Micra or Seciento. WHY?
