Hi All,

Recently sold my F430 Spyder and am keen to get a Boxster Spyder as my new toy ...

Thing is, My desired spec is as follows....
White
Sports Chrono
Air Con
Sat Nav
PSE
Bucket seats with Carbon backs (standard equipment, but often 'upgraded')
PDK with paddle shifters

I know for some purists they prefer no sat nav or air con, to keep it light weight. The only part of the above spec that I would consider changing is PDK for manual...

My question is, am I likely to find my ideal spec if I am patient...or should I bite the bullet and get one that doesn't quite tick every box?

If anyone is out there looking to sell one - drop me a pm..!

I'm sure there was one on PH or autotrader recently with that sort of spec.

Have you driven one? Bit of a change from the 430.

with only 210-230 UK cars made !!

you cannot get the perfect spec you want most of the time.

I would have to question why in a open top concept car you would want AC though ?

and I would also question PDK in a car like this, but each to their own on spec and gearbox choice.

What I can say is the car is an amazing car to own and drive what ever spec, but I bought into the weight thing after owning a few Lotus's and wanted none of the extra bits put back in, so my car is full light weight spec. (not poverty spec, as rrp on mine is top dollar)
remember the bits they put back in are NO cost options :-)

the other issue is the car is still not that known, so is still seen as a normal car and people expect a great roof.

the roof is st, I will not beat about the bush, it's a pain to put on, and is very very noisy, it is water tight though, which some NON owners seem to say it's not. So to that point it's a great roof, lol as it works.

you can feel the lack of weight though and the car drives very very well and is as fast as most 400BHp cars, due in part to less weight.(so why add it back in ? )

So my questions to you are:
1: why do you want a Spyder over a Boxster ?
2: can you live with the roof ?
3: IF you can live with the st roof, why add all the weight back in ?
4: oem NAV even the latest is still not full post code, why do people want NAV ? NAV also does not give the nice B road routes
I think the smart phone has killed of cars needing NAV. (most cars have it anyway , so a mute point really)

my next point is spec,
the 4 main reselling points seem to be
1: Manual
2: Sypder wheels
3: Buckets seats
4: white or red colour.

if it has those 4 the rest of the spec is a plus point, but imo those 4 things make the cars for sale sell quicker.

what's nice to have on top of the big 3 ?
1: PSE
2: short shift
3: full leather
4: Sports mode

but you can add 3 of those 4 after market if you wish. Full leather does lift the car though and make you feel you own a 60k car.
the plastic dash does cheapen the car, but it's a rare option and was expensive to add in.

there is a nice private car for sale in white atm which would be my choice at £34.k and good spec.

have fun hunting and if you want to know more about Spyder's pm me.

And you can come and see mine if you are in the Midlands :-)

PS this is the car I ment
very keen price and great value imo, yes a few more miles than most, but at that price it depends how many you will add in the next few years to bring it back in line.

Appreciate the replies....

Yes - will be a very different proposition to the F430 - but perhaps a little more usable on the road...don't get me wrong the 430 was fantastic in pretty much every way ... but you tend to run out of road quickly - it does have a great sense of theatre though... and surprisingly well built.

But I have decided to 'downsize' a little... and nearly bought one of these couple years ago - they look great and drive great! Maybe some stigma about the boxster label - but I don't really care what others think - its about the drive.

re the points on weight - you are right..... BUT - I use sat nav all the time.. and just want it despite the weight. Truth is the weight thing isn't that important to me - I am not that good a driver that I will be on the edge often, and an extra 50kg is not the end of the world for me...

The roof - that's fine - adds to the excitement! may get annoying - but I will drive 90% with it off. Its just a 3rd car for me.

Still want aircon - more for if I use it when its cold / wet to stop from steaming up tan to keep me cool in summer.

a normal Boxster - errrm - not really interested - great cars - but the speedster humps on the back of this thing just make the car desirable imho...

PDK/Manual - yup - good point... have owned 997 manual and pdk's.... liked both - prefer manuals as a rule (even my 430 was manual)... but the pdk box is very good, and just fancied a change - but as I said - its the one option I am not so concerned about...

I saw the one at34k at the weekend and liked it - but no satnav - and I just checked with Porsche - its just over 4k to retro fit!!! - I know the argument is tom tom/iphone - but its just not the same for me...hard to explain but like the car to be original without bits all over the place - and do think despite weight the satnav could be important for resale.

I am sure you will find a car, they do change hands quite often.

NAV and resale, Not a problem imo on this car, I don't even have a radio :-)

As I said the main 4 items on my list seem to help the cars sell fast, esp wheels.

I have also noticed new owners seem to be after the drive, so come from Lotus , Caterham etc, these guys are used to not having all the toys.

the older the car gets the more wheels and Buckets will be an issue, 3rd party dealers take any thing in atm and totally miss the market for the car.

now the F430 on the other hand (a car I would like to own) seems to need the F1 box for top £ and fast resale, and the manual gets a slating. I was hunting out a manual and every one said get the F1 box.

The short shift manual in the Spyder is a sweet change and fast.

this seems to be a forum mithe lol and every one states this for wanting AC

the Spyder lets in so much air they it don't steam up, and if it's a 3rd car you will not be using it in the wet like most of us either :-).

I also don't use the roof, it's a toy fun car to be used roof off. I don't even take it out with me.
But today I am using the car and might have to take the roof with me just In case.

AS for keeping cool, the hottest day this year has been 21 lol it's harder to keep warm ;-p

re the F430 - I would try the manual before paying for the F1... yes the F1 box is the quicker of the 2 without a doubt - but the open gate of the manual is just delightful!

Re Spyder - I guess if I end up going manual - short shift is retro fittable too? Had the ss kit in my manual 997 and thought it was great

or buy the part and fit your self.
A must have though for the car, but cheap to add.

Good spec. I've got a CR so not that different and I had a few debates about spec at the time that I ordered mine.

My advice for what it's worth, if you go PDK, don't compromise and make sure you have paddles.

Regarding satnav/radio, don't bother. The unit in the car is complete rubbish and they were emptying out the parts bin. You're better getting an after market product and fitting that, I have seen some very good retrofits which unless I knew better, I would think were OEM. As it happens, I stripped my head unit out in favour of the storage bin such was my irritation with the poor quality of it. Makes me sound like an old man when I say this but the frustration I have with mine and you'll get this with yours is that there is nowhere to store oddments - phone, keys and so on. As the doors are aluminium, there are no bins and there is only a small oddment tray under the arm rest and underneath the climate control. There is space under the seats (assuming you go Sports buckets with carbon fibre backs) but you don't necessarily want everything rattling around.

Bear in mind you can't adjust Sports Buckets as well - they can only go forward or back but you may already know this. According to my dealer, that's usually the reason people spec the other seats - to get the adjustment controls but I think it really takes away from the car, whether a CR or Spyder.

I'd also ensure that you retain the Spyder wheels, apart from the fact that they're light, they're lovely looking wheels.

Hi Simon
Great choice, having had a few Lotus' and 911's the Spyder is still very special to me. Mine is black and has the toys you mention, I was lucky to find the one I wanted but did hold out for it.
I agree with a lot of whats already been said but when spending 35-40k on a car it has to be perfect to you whether that means having sat nav or no radio at all smile

From my experience of over 2 years of ownership. My biggest tick box is the PSE, decouple the 'flaps' and you get a great sound. Sat Nav, yep, actually a big improvement on the old ones and with the IPod connection all the music is controlled through the screen, and having had a standard Boxster courtesy car there is a huge improvement between the standard radio and the upgraded one, to me close enough to the BOSE in my old 997, the standard fit is very weedy as someone mentioned.
In addition Sport Chrono... used it once, dont quite get the point on the road. Cruise control, fine for the M3, but as also mentioned, the Carbon bucket seats set it apart, snug and supportive, the Spyder wheels also are/were the lightest Porsche made improving unsprung weight, and the over all styling I find turns heads and gets 2nd looks when in towns as people think its a Boxster then notice it kind of isnt.
Either way, even if i win the 90m on the Euromillions my Spyder will still be in the garage, it would just have a few friends to keep it company!

Good luck and it will be a fine purchase for those sunny days!

Thanks Simon - but afraid I intend on claiming the 90m this time..!

One other question - can you get an Alcantara steering wheel for it - think that would set it off nicely!

Oh - and I do have a crazy idea.... and wonder if any of you gurus that understand things like photoshop etc could help?

Is there anyone that could show a pic of a white Spyder, with Spyder wheels ... BUT - with the wheels in gold?

Just an idea - so don't flame me!

My must haves on a spyder are;

Manual - because it is better!
Buckets - why on earth replace them.
Spyder wheels - lightest 19s and look great.. Why on earth replace them.
Sports exhaust - awesome noise.
A/C - hot day with rain therefore roof up, makes cabin pretty unpleasant. I hate boiling away.
Full leather - really lifts cabin.
Sports shift - feels nice.
Radio - a great drive can be even better with music sometimes.

Nice options;
Extended alcantara - nice mix of cabin materials

At the end of the day, they are road cars. Some comforts are nice. Even putting some options in, it will always be lighter than a specced normal boxster.

The roof is (really) simple to use once you've had a little practice. It is water tight, but is noisy. However it is noisier roof off when used as intended, so if you can live with that then roof up is fine.

Colour is personal preference.

I can't see the point of sport chrono. The car isn't actually any faster (except pdk?)

I would personally just get a standalone sat nav unit. They are so more user friendly and easier to update.

I'm still loving mine, can't wait to get it over to Le mans in less than 2 weeks now.

There were two alcantara options;

1. Wheel and gearknob. Standalone option.

2. (extended alcantara) Door panels and arm rest. Could only be optioned either with option 1 or if you optioned full leather. Got this with full leather and it looks great.

Ps... No to the gold wheels! IMHO

Yes, you can and I have it. If you can get it, it's awesome but I've never seen a car other than mine with it. I don't know if you can do it as a retrofit.
