It crossed my mind today that there are a high number of threads about the GT3 and yet they probably represent less than 1% of cars ever produced by Porsche.

What does this say about the car?

Either it's very problematic, or very popular.

It just means people think about buying them in spring.

Come winter there will be a load of cars for sale which just sit there as normal for months.

I guess its the sort of car that most of us would like to own at some point and have endless questions to try and justify the outlay.

GT3s are mostly owned by enthusiasts, and enthusiasts tend to use car forums ?

This! Although I might have put it a bit more diplomatically. biggrin

You have to "Get" what they're about though. Not for everyone but those in the know, know. smile

I can't think of a more involving 911. Not everyone wants that obviously but I go out for a summers drive to drive, not to sit in leather clad luxury fiddling with sat nav and Bose hifi.

Long live the king. wink

Plus what jmracing said. Forums bring the geeks, sorry enthusiasts, together.

GT3 threads are popular because the cars are staring to be wheeled out of the garage/storage for some summer fun!

Give it a few months and there will be loads of 'How do I store my GT3 for the winter' threads biggrin

High turn-over rate of ownership.

Certainly my '2004 Toyota Corolla 1.6 VVTi Prospective Owners' thread didn't drum up much interest.

For me I always read the GT3 threads, as I'd love to own one. However, my finances + the feeling that they're too much car for the road means I can't/won't, so I just read what other people have to say.

It's a good point though - a Turbo interests me nowhere near as much for some reason.

every porsche fan aspires to have owned a GT3 at least once. so the interest can be fevered at times.

They're great, if you haven't try one. smile

PEC do a driving day where you can sample them. I drove the wheels of their 997 GT3 3.8 CS once. cloud9

Then the 18 year old (looked it at least) instructor showed me what it really can do...

All Porsche's are truly amazing cars. Each has their own individual characteristics. The GT3 is an amazing car (being an owner). It makes me smile just thinking about it. My experience is something that I want to share.

It's both aspirational (so many of those who haven't haven't owned one - want to) and evocative (so those who have had one are only too happy to talk about what the experience is like)! biggrin

Beg to differ. Both of my GT3s were/are 1 previous owner cars.

They're fking epic, that's why they're revered and discussed ad infinitum.

In their own way they are sort of old-fashioned....mechanical, manual, non-luxurious, and attract people who are passionate about them. They have their own eccentricities and imperfections, and often people have interesting experiences in them, and want to share the good and bad newssmile. I love the things, but am very comfortable that many people I know have absolutely no idea whysmile

This.

The fact that most people probably just see a 911 with a chavvy wing, yet those that know... Know!

Because behind the wheel we would all like to think we are Walter Röhrl.

But most of us are not. There is no doubt that point to point cross country I can be quicker in my 991S than I could be in my RS.

But I still loved the RS for the 1% of the time when it was better - because for that 1% it was like nothing else on earth.
