Hi folks,

My car doesn't have a cigarette lighter, so does anyone know of a decent tyre inflator that connects directly to the battery terminals?

All the best,

david

Surely its a simple enough job to cut off the cigar lighter connection and put on two crocodile clips?

Or fit a cigarette lighter, my 50 year old Riley has one which I use for satnav, phone charging etc.

Ring RAC605 comes with three power supply cables- cig lighter plug, ring terminals and crocodile clips.

Good reviews on Amazon, I ordered one earlier for the same reason as you (Caterham has no cig lighter funnily enough!)

P.S. be quick I got the second 'till last one wink

You can buy a lead with croc clip on one end and a femail cig lighter on tother, quite a few pumps come with them in the box.

for crying out loud, what are you guys on, unless you're disabled buy a good quality (manual) foot pump - quicker to get out, use and put back, no drain on battery either

also have a good reliable separate pressure gauge, don't rely on gauges on electric pumps or on petrol station forecourt or those used in garages

if you're having to inflate your tyres often then there could be something wrong with them or the wheels

If other people's preferred method of tyre inflation winds you up enough to post this kind of response, I would advise staying away from the Internet.

With three cars and a weekly tyre pressure check to do, I'll stick with my electric pump - if that's OK with you. The gauge on it is very accurate compared with A) my digital gauge and B) my 50 year old Dunlop gauge. Plus, of course, my satnav and phone can't be recharged from a foot pump.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Looking at the ring now (that doesn't read quite as I intended...)

Foot pumps? yes I've been through several and they've all been crap. Some buckled and twisted. Others leaked. Now I'm looking at other options.

Rewiring the car? It's just been through a 9 month engine rebuild so my appetite for doing anything to it other than driving it is nil.

Fitting bulldog clips? Possibly but if there's one on the market already then why bother?

You don't need to rewire the car to fit a cigarette lighter, not even if it's a positive earth like mine.

chill pills all round for you lightweights and gadget enthusiasts

pump your tyres up how you like the only serious bit in my post was the alternative of a footpump (and if anyone was physically disabled and unable to use a footpump)

and where did I say you shouldn't install a cigar lighter socket

I had to use my foot pump only the other night as my wife's car is back from the repairers and sure enough the pressures were wrong, took me only a few minutes and if I'd had to times that by three it still would have been only a few minutes and I'm a bit of a bloater but it doesn't take the puff out of me

you do need to get a decent foot pump that doesn't twist or bend, I've had mine so long I can't remember, if it wasn't for the fact I carry it in the boot of my cars for the last 20 years instead of a spare tyre I'd have a double cylinder for even more steed and stability

don't forget to check your spare wheels, many do

I think next I'll tell all you metrosexuals (whatever they are) off for wearing perfume and calling it aftershave

a SatNav in a classic is a road atlas

and a phone is something you find in red boxes

. . . more chill pills required gents

ETA: forgot this bit, it's me age ya know, have a look at the thread title

hehe No chill pills required over here thanks, I think you'd better keep 'em hippy

I have used garage forecourt compressors, footpumps and decent quality gauges for everything until now.

I have a BMW tow car, a trailer and a Caterham race car to look after.

I put the BMWs tyre pressures up by ~5psi all 'round every time the car gets loaded up (at least once a month on average). If you want to pump up 4x 225/60 to 40psi manually then be my guest- a foot pump will suffice (at least until it falls apart and lets you down). I'd rather have a compressor do it for the same money as a decent foot pump. Also if I get a puncture on a busy road, I can hook up the compressor and retreat behind the ARMCO while it does it's thang instead of standing roadside with my footpump waiting to get obliterated by an HGV.

Being a race car, the Caterham's tyre pressures are up and down like a we's drawers depending on how the sky looks. Again, do it manually if you like but I'd rather spend the dying minutes before I have to go to the assembly area for a race sorting out my roll bars and getting ready to drive the thing than pumping tyres up manually.

Obviously I have accurate gauges (0-30psi for the race car and 0-60psi for everything else).

That's told us then - no satnav to warn of speed cameras, no phone to use in place of the inaccurate speedo in my car. I'd better go back to cycling, I'm obviously a failure in passing wind getmecoat

with respect sir the BMW and race car aren't classic cars in the usual (disputed) terms, I don't know about your trailer perhaps it is

all the gauges on electric pumps, petrol station and garage forecourts that I've ever seen have been inaccurate, widely so with some, perhaps I was just unlucky or things have improved greatly in recent years

as a racer you'll need to keep fit (well relatively based on the ones I know) so can I suggest a double-cylinder foot pump for your self, it doesn't take that long or much effort and you're not going from zero on all (any?) of the tyres

do you use the electric pump to deflate your tyres too(?)

"peace on you brother" ("and you")

why would you need warning of speed cameras? (they're marked in road atlases too)

why are you driving about with an inaccurate speedo? you've got a rev counter in your Riley why don't you read your speed off of that

Glad to help! I've never used his services, but I edit a classic car club newsletter and he got in touch a while ago to enquire about advertising and I've bookmarked his site ever since! I'm tempted by a Bristol Pneumatics model (obviously) but out of stock now and too expensive for me when they aren't!
