Bearing in mind porsche's long history in making cars, what do people consider to be the best Porsche ever made?

For me it has to be the 930turbo. It was a stand out car in the 80's due to its looks and performance and is an icon.even though there are far more accomplished cars out there now.

996 C4S with PSE...... a sweet point in the ongoing filtering out with time of old school 911 virtues and the usability and dynamic performance expected of a modern sports car/GT.

Just about fast enough for UK roads.
Sounds fantastic.
Looks (are open to interpretation but) classic lines - no scoops or spoilers and a rear reflector!
90% of the steering feedback of older air cooled cars.
90% of the creature comforts of modern cars.
Enough of a step up from the cooking cars in terms of chassis suspension and brakes.
No stop start.
No silly e-handbrake!
4WD giving access to the dynamic ability in any weather or road surface.

You mean road car?

It maybe a cliche, but it's the 2.7RS.

For me it has to be the 911GT or 993GT2. Stunning looking piece of kit and the evo 1998 version with its K24 turbo's makes it an awesome weapon.

2 cars one for each era .
1 : 73 rsr , just the pinnacle . 911 turned up to 11 but still a bloody good fun car .
2 : Carrera GT . Nothing of this era comes close . Nothing .

Quite choice is the 996 C4S...but having owned it and tracked it heavily...and then the 7.1 GT3, 7.2 C2S, and now a 7.2 GT3RS....the latter do all rather shade it...with the 7.2 GT3RS...the apex.

The best porsche ?

Easy, its the 911

Which one ?

Well my answer would be all of them.

Every single generation ive driven has a meaning, a place and a relevance.

Just pick your own poison, that bits up to you.

Having also own a C4S of course ill agree. But what MNCG has said sums it up in a nutshell. I would love a GT3 of any sort but could i be able to get into it and go to work like i do with mine every day since i bought it back in Nov last year? Would i look out of the window and think "thats looks f^cking good"? Now the answer to that last question is a bit of a conjecture as i would love to be able to afford a GT3 so if i had one, i would be thankful ive got it but the C4S does look the bees! And the amount of GT (read high end 911's) owners who were saying they were putting their car to bed in Nov only to get it out in Feb......why? I have to admit i didnt read any C4S owners doing the same?

Indeed valid point...the GT3's are inclined to be fair weather friends, although I suspect some boots that are little more weather accommodating (MP Super Sports for intance) can change that calculus.....

To its eminent credit, my C4S...even though on Sport Cups....managed to get me through one astonishing Texas deluge...think biblical...whilst on the way back from Texas World Speedway to H-town...

Thats wonderful.

I have had a few and loved them all. I have flitted about between 911's keeping most for around 2 years.

The last 2 I have built to my current requirements which is great because you can tailor things exactly how you desire them.

My latest one has great old school handling but drives modern enough, is lightweight, awesome brakes, loads of grip, looks superb and even can fit 3 people!

Built just for me and my taste

i hear what you are saying there.i own one myself and tbh i suppose as i havent owned it that long yet,i hadnt considered the points you make. it is an amazingly usable car and travels across country so easily.

the answers in the thread are all valid as they are all personal opinions so are all correct. some of the cars listed are awesome i will admit. and the black one with the duck tail in the picture above is beautiful.
i like thread slike this as you get so many different options and reasons it gives you an insight into people ages, views and tastes smile

part of my choice in the 930 is due to my age, being 35 it was the car that was on my wall as a kid and its lines to me are THE defining shape of a 911. yes it has heavy steering, heavy clutch, odd floor mount pedal and a dated interior with random switch positions but it is the one that has always had my heart.(just not brave enough to own one unless i win the lotto)

Well I'm a front engined water cooled fan, so for me its the 944 Turbo (250). Well built, brilliant handling and excellent performance.

Pity they never progressed with the 968 turbo in mainstream production in my view.
