This August, me and 3 others are going to fly down to Greece and have a crack at the world altitude record for fixed wing microlights. Because it's there (and because the aircraft we fly is called an Ikarus and well, Icarus... Greece... altitude... it seemed like a good idea at the time!)

This is an Ikarus:

and if it looks a bit too 'proper' then I made a video to explain a bit more about it.

We're doing a 4000 mile return trip to get down to Crete: England – France – Germany- Czech Republic – Slovakia – Hungary – Romania – Bulgaria – Greece which is going to be pretty interesting in our lightweight, VFR-only aircraft. We need to reach 25,500ft to beat the existing record. Oh, and two of us haven't actually got our pilots licence yet... rofl

Thought this might appeal to some of the Boats, Planes and Trains regulars, so check out our website or our Facebook if you think it's groovy - we'll be doing plenty of videos and live GPS tracking and all that sort of stuff. Or if you're local, drop into Blackbushe and say hello, we're often dossing around swearing at the wind. :-)

Watching with interest. Be careful and don't underestimate the value of experience.

probably just me, but great amusement replaying "my fingers in the cockpit" a few times biggrin

love the c42, where i started the slippery slope from at Clench Common, before training on a Thruster T600n!

good luck with the attempt, sounds like a great adventure!

the fabric is XLAM wink similar (if not the same) to modern sail material.

p.s. you have a ballistic chute in that one also so your MTOW is 472.5kg smile

Bookmarked.

As a retired floppy PG pilot, the greatest experiences of my flying life were in Greece, off the slopes of Mt. Olympus. Good luck & remember: task fixation is not a good thing - tomorrow is another day. smile

Ultralam, I was told. One of those moments when you realise you've got half way through what you're filming and your brain has gone into neutral. boxedin
I didn't want to complicate matters by explaining the extra allowance for the BRS but yes, our MTOW is of course higher because of it.

Soo, next question. How exactly are the four of you flying down there and doing the record attempt. 2 microlights?
