Hi Guys

So I posted yesterday in another thread that I overfilled the tank with oil, and that the car was due for a service anyway. The 6 year service including brake fluid and drive belt replacement has been done at £771.85 but they did apparently find a few 'extra' things that needed doing:

Recommended -

Front brake pads approx 90% worn - £650.00
O/S numberplate light not working, requires a new lamp - £82.80
Suspension geometry check recommended due to front tyres worn more on the inside edge - £195.00
Air conditioning service - £282.00

Advisory -

Front tyres worn on inner edge, 60% worn in the center - £626.00 (for both tyres)
Rear brake pads approx 60% worn - £395.00

Warranty

Carry out 111 point pre warranty check - £216.00
12 months warranty with Porsche assist - £1189.00
24 months warranty with Porsche assist - £2315.00

Warranty can only be applied if the car passes the pre warranty check, of course.

He also tried to tell me that the front air vents need cleaning out for air flow regulation, when I pointed out that they did this around 3 weeks ago he retracted the statement! I am slightly concerned about exaggeration on the OPCs behalf, but parts like the front brake pads are something I can't ignore.

My view currently is:
- I am thinking about leaving the air con as it's working fine, leaving the numberplate light as I could get an indy to do it, but it doesn't bother me right now, the suspension geometry check I am not sure about so some advice would be appreciated.
- I am leaving the front tyres and rear break pads for now (will look at them in around 3 months).
- Will try to negotiate on the warranty but will prob do for 1 year.

Does anyone have any further advice over these items, am I paying far too much for the fron brake pads for example and would I be better off getting them and anything else done elsewhere?

Thanks

P

Blimey. £650.00 for new front pads? But why 'only' £395.00 for the rears.
Daylight robbery comes to mind.

£626.00 for a pair of new front tyres?

Maybe I'm just poor, but seriously these all seem very expensive.

That's what I was thinking, too. My feeling is to source them independently and go to a recommended indy. Eagerly waiting for advice from the people on this forum!

I would not bother getting the OPC to do the geo check. You would be better off going to someone like JZM or PARR or any other decent independent and they will do a proper job on all four wheels!

The other prices seem ridiculous!

Thanks that sounds more reasonable. Might give them a call.

I'm in London Earls Court area, hence the nearest OPC is West London. I am willing to travel within reason to get what I need if it means cheaper price and potentially better quality work.

I've always used an Indie (911 Sport in Lincs) for my 996 since purchase in 2006 and found them to be excellent. I've never used an OPC for any Porsche I've owned so I cannot compare but the Indie has made sensible recommendations when necessary and always carried out work to a very high standard. I'm aware that some people like to have OPC stamps in the book but I would be more interested in seeing stamps from a good Indie myself.

Wow, I'm worried my car might come back with the side door bashed in or something now! OK, I think the way is pretty clear: I am going to find a reputable indy or two who can do most of this work at a much lower cost (using official parts where applicable), and perhaps even at a higher quality level.

Jaz Porsche in Wembley has been recommended, as has Parr in West Sussex. Does anybody have any other recommendations?

Hi Martian, would appreciate an in-depth reply if you get the chance. Need to sort this out this week if I can!

The three Indies that I know, trust and have used in the South are:
Nine Excellence (Near Gatwick)
Northway in Theale (near Reading)
JZM in Hemel Hemstead

They really do know how to take the pi$$!! Those prices are complete and utter daylight robbery.

Without searching for exact amounts, off the top of my head I would suggest you should be paying around

F pads £90-150 fitted
R pads £70 - 100 fitted
2 front tyres £400
A/C service £150
And the best of all - number plate lamp £10

Hi Peter - I'm in Limehouse and I have used OPC Mid Sussex for over 3.5 years as they are better than everyone on pricing and have great service.

Give Steven a call in Servicing there and I'm sure he will be happy to advise you on what you have been quoted and the price.
