...it will be *another* week before my 964RS turns up. All for the best, as the MoT threw up the need for replacement pads and disks, which the current owner is spending 400 GBP on for me. However, there are no rear disks for a 964RS in the country, so they are being flown in by carrier pigeon from the Fatherland tomorrow. Father bloody away than I'd like to be honest.

At least the car will be sorted when I pick it up. George (current owner) is a real petrol head - he played the engine note (at 6000 revs) down his mobile to me...

Domster,

I've been following your agonising wait for your 964RS with great interest as I am selling my 993 next month (after it blew up ) and will ideally be getting a 964RS myself later this year or early next year.

So I look forward to hearing how you get on with yours when it arrives! (Should be fantastic I dare say)

Cheers,

Ian.

How did my car blow up? I was doing about 100 - 120mhp along the motorway in France on the way to Calais when the engine blew up in a spectacular cloud of smoke. A bearing in the engine had given up and a con-rod punched a hole out the bottom!

There had been no indication of a problem as temperature and pressure were fine and the car was running well. The car had done a bit of hard driving the previous few days in Switzerland but nothing it wasn't built for. The car's got a full OPC service history and the previous owner was a friend of mine who spared no expense on the car.

Guess I was just unlucky as sh1t does happen. But I am selling it as it's destroyed my faith in the car (but not the marque) and my bank balance.

Ian.

Bloody hell! You must be one in a million, very unlucky. What mileage was the car by the way? I don't suppose the warranty will still be in place either - ouch! How much are we talking for a rebuild, or replacement? I've heard turbo's can be pricey to run after a few miles, but I'd never expect any hassle with a carrera. Better luck next time.

The car had 65,000 on the clock and no warranty at the time so I ended up footing the £6000 repair bill!

With my luck I'm now waiting to be struck by lightning or to bump into Lord Lucan. Or both...

Sorry to hear about your misfortune - 993 engines are generally unlikely to go pop, but I have been told they are less sturdy than earlier engines as the 993 was the first production porsche to be built to the accountants' wishes not just the engineers' (the 964 apparently has a stronger bottom end, and they used the turbo 2 bottom end in the le mans cars or something).

Cheapest s/h engine I have seen was about 4k for a 993. 6k rebuild unlucky but probably the best route - UV would convince you to get titanium rods at the same time!

For anyone interested in the history of my car-to-be and some pics, this link covers all the 911&PW running reports - right up to the point George decided to wave goodbye to it.

Domster, interesting article. It's certainly been through the wars hasn't it?! Hopefully it'll have an easier life from now on.

It should be so lucky

That said, I will treat it to a bit of TLC from now on, and Bodytechnics reckoned it was now 'almost a concourse car'.

That's cos they repaired it mate - not likely to say it looks like your Mum's arse are they!!

I have to disagree with the '993 weaker than 964' point, (although I know you like any opportunity to have a pop at us accountants Dom ) as having spoken to a few people about just that, most think the 993 engine was by far the best engineered Porsche engine of all the production cars and certainly far better than the newer water cooled 996 motor. Still, I'll publically eat my words when mine turns itself into a chicken vindaloo (as it could so easily have done last night racing a Chimp).

ps: For anyone that's seen my other posts in the speeding section, having received my first speeding ticket earlier this week and contested it - I received a letter confirming it's been dropped - Now that's a result!! :youllnevercatchmealiveofficer:

The 993 engine may be the best engineered or designed, but it isn't the strongest. I was merely referring to the strength of the bottom end, which was over-engineered on earlier cars.

There's a simple test. You take your 993 and I'll take the 964RS. We'll disconnect limiters and rev our engines at full chat. When you 'audit' your engine afterwards Mr Scott, you may find that my conrod count is slightly better

Don't worry mate, I'll be doing it 'Enron' and 'Worldcom' stlye, so will produce better figures than you regardless of the con rod count!!
