rear wheel rattling on mtb

going for a ride last night, noticed that my rear wheel made some weird rattling sounds. happened when going over bumpy roads, but interestingly not when going over grassy fields. i cannot replicate the problem by simply dropping the back of the bike repeatedly when I'm standing with it so not sure what it could be. any ideas? fwiw wheels are mavic crossmax slr's

I assume you've checked everything is tight like wheel nuts or quick release, bottle cage, and also made sure the seat post isn't making the noise?

seat post???? that is very interesting.... i have just replaced the seat post with a dropper post. it's seemingly clamped into place ok . why should it rattle? thinking about it the ratting started when i changed the post round...

why does it sound like the wheel is rattling though?

I get the chain slapping the spokes on my cross bike from time to time.

Rear spoke nipple come loose and now rattling inside the rim?

Perhaps you are riding too slowly so you can hear the spokey dokeys sliding up and down?

A friend had a wheel rattle (albeit the front wheel) that he couldn't replicate under laboratory conditions

It turned out to be a tab that links the two ends on the rim together from when it's transformed from an extruded length into a circle had come loose and was rattling around in the void.

His was a releltivly new Bontrager wheel, and was replaced under warranty.

Not saying this is the same but an avenue of exploration to explore.
